Do persons who have committed sexual crimes have a higher recidivism rate than criminals with non-sexual crimes?

In Britain the overall re-offending rate is pretty stable at around 26% to 29% each year. That is adult and juvenile persons who commit another offence within one year of being convicted of one. Less than 1% of all proven re-offences committed over the one year follow-up period were serious violent or sexual offences with very little change between 2000 and 2012.

Those who have studied the topic talk of the wide gap between public fear of sex offenders reoffending and the very small reoffending rate in reality.

I think this due to the fact that bad news sells newspapers and that 5,000 sex offenders who didn't commit any repeat offences doesn't get in the newpapers, one who does gets on the front page.

I have found that in the US, according to the Department of Justice, the reoffending rate for sexual offences (19%) is less than for violent criminals in general (45%).
