ActiveX and MSN games

Reply Wed 24 Nov, 2004 01:39 pm
I have been happily playing various games on the Essential MSN Games site, but today I cannot install any of them. I get a message that I should click on the yellow bar near the top of my browser and then click Install ActiveX Control. But there isn't any yellow bar that I can find.

Does anyone have a solution?

Also, once ActiveX Control is installed, shouldn't it stay on my computer and apply in all situations where ActiveX is called for from that time forward? Confused

If you have IE 6, you should see a bar at the top, which notifies you that IE blocked the ActiveX from running, but if you want to run it, click on the bar.

However, if you disabled the pop-up block notification, you won't see this... go tools ->Pop-up blocker->Settings. Make sure the 'Show information bar when pop-up is blocked' is checked.

Then try again.

If you're not using IE, you might have some 3rd party pop-up blocker. Try configuring it to allow activeX for this time

While the problem you describe is typical XP SP2, it should be noted that a wide variety of Security/Privacy software can inhibit ActiveX functionality. One thing you might wanna try would be to put the MSN Games site into your "Trusted" zone:
From IE toolbar: Tools > Internet Options > Security > "Trusted Sites" > Sites ... type the base URL of the site into the dialog box (www.sitename.domain), click "Add", then confirm and "OK to exit. That might do it for ya.
