A friend of mine joined recently.

He hasn't posted yet, but wanted to send me a pm to 1) announce his arrival, and 2) ask me some questions.
I pm'd him to welcome him.
He just told me that he can't pm til he's been here a bit.

How long will he have to wait to use the pm function? (is this in the FAQ? did I miss it somehow?)

Thanks,

b2

As far as I know, answering PMs from those who have access to sending them is still possible for new members.

Mrs Walter hasn't posted here anything, but is PM'ing me quite [and others] often as well as an old friend of mine.

First time I hear of such, ehBeth, too.

In light of certain problems, PM's are accessible to those who have been here for a while. One may always answer those that are sent by a long time member, but may not initiate.

Always a good idea to bring this to the attention of the constituency, ehBeth. Thanks.

Ahhhhhhhh, thanks Letty.
So he'll be able to respond, and I can then poke him to actually post!

I had a couple of newbies PMing me with ... Well, there was nothing too bad in the content--but I found it weird to get awkward come ons and weird questions from people ("How do I post this?" and something about....cars?)

Its uncomfortable to wiggle out of that.

I don't think I complained about it. Also didn't know of the restriction. Sort of glad about the rule.

I dunno. I am guessing 500 posts or something like that. But then I haven't paid much attention to the layers of a2kness.

That hasn't been my experience. Although roger PM'd me my 2nd day here, I have not yet been able to respond. roger is indeed what you would consider a long time member, yes?

Well, I still can't respond to his PM, so it must be something personal. Crying or Very sad

There was a time when newbies could answer oldies. It may have been rescinded...

ForeverYoung- No, I think that you have got it wrong. It is nothing personal. New members can read PMs sent from old members, but can't respond to them. I do not know how long that you have to be a member, or how many posts you have to have made before you are cleared to send PMs.

I think that I have said this before, but it is my understanding that this rule was designed for a purpose. There were some people who joined A2K. Some of them never posted on the forums, but used the PMs to spam their products or services. By not permitting new members to PM, A2K is avoiding this problem.

Phoenix32890,

I was kidding about it being personal.

That's amazing that people would join and then spam! ugh

So, do you have any idea if there is a # of posts or time being here before I will be able to respond to Roger, or initiate a PM for that matter?

Thanks in advance!

ForeverYoung, I believe there's been a change in PM usage since Letty posted that.

Just keep posting. Eventually you should be able to PM, assuming you continue to be a "member in good standing"...
