Has anyone migrated from windows to Linux and found the experience enjoyable?
Did anyone cross over and find that they dont need or use windows anymore?
I ask because I did and I do, and after reading all the spyware, virus, hijak this, posts on this site, I'm glad I did. I'm not trying to convert anybody, or give winblos a bad rap , but I'm curious.

I spend a lot of time reading Linux forums and wanted a break.. I tried to visit abuzz but there it was.......gone........

I use both, along with other *nix operating systems.

Not me, as there are still many many things that are not best done on a Linux box.

"Winblows"? Not trying to give a bad rap?

Another Linux fanboy trying to pretend it's not OS bait.

Thanks Craven. Linux isn't so good with 3d graphics and windows beats it hands down at gaming. Some audio applications don't seem to work as well under linux.
Configuring some hardware can be a nightmare as well, especially if it's older hardware. winmodems don't work so hot , and when ya get them to work they usually don't work too good. The learning curve can be somewhat steep too , at least that's been my experience, and GOOD documentation can be hard to find. AOL doesn't support linux and that can be a bad thing ? I'm a backgammon freak and I think gnu backgammon performs a little bit better under windows. I don't use a pc for gaming so the graphics performance doesn't bother me. I'm sure you could add to the list of things that linux doesn't do too well. Still, I'm a linux fanboy, in part because of the open-source "movement" and because I think linux is more stable then any of the windows family. it leaves a lot of room to tinker with the operating system,
The manner in which linux reads and writes to the hard drive makes more sense then ntfs or FAT file systems (no defragging) , and I don't have to be paranoid about viruses. As linux grows in popularity I'm sure the virus threat will increase. Of the available linux flavors I think SuSE is the best for windows users that want to get a taste of linux, and that's probably because I started with SuSE. I mess around with alll of them, and Mandrake or Redhat seem to be equally user friendly. Thanks for answering

I don't have a linux machine solely dedicated to linux, but I do have dual boot (Windows XP & Gentoo).

I enjoy Gentoo Linux a lot, even the drudgery of having to update portage, rebuilding my flags and such is partially fun; however, Windows just cannot be replaced.

There are many applications that linux just doesn't have, and being in college still, most the required software just cannot be used in Linux.

I've tried WineX and such, works decent... absolutely a great bride divide for most apps, but it's certainly not stable enough for heavy full-time crucial use...

I love Gentoo... but Windows still has my attention for the most part.

Thanks for replying. I haven't used Gentoo yet but I read a lot of positive things about it. Currently I'm messing around with Debian woody stable and getting ready to bake a new kernel for it so I don't have to play games with scsi-emulation to burn cd's. A lot of folks I know dual-boot xp and nix. personally I don't care for windows , not just because of its' proprietary, monopolistic nature, but tying the o.s. desktop, and ie explorer so tightly together eats up a lot of resources, mainly ram. And the security issues with i.e.. Well.. nuff said.. patches, patches, patches, and another patch to patch the last patch. It has been my experience that the gecko based browsers work just as well, if not better, they just don't initialise as fast as explorer because they're not weaved into the o.s.. Some folks have had good luck pre-linking mozilla or whatever browser they're using and getting a boost in performance. I.M.H.O Konqueror performs as well as ie but konqueror is weaved in too. Konqueror has difficulty at many sites Yahoo mail especially, because yahoos software only plays nice with microjunk. I can use yahoo mail, but I don't get all the bells and whistles like fancy formatting.
j2re1.4.2_05 is a bit more sluggish then microsofts java too I think, but I can live with it. I was dual or multi-booting for a while and then I threw windows out the window, but I keep the disks because I spent so much money for them. They're hanging on my "wall of shame" alongside the compaq 4 and 5000 series motherboards I've come across. There's an old A.O.L version 4 disk up there too that was lodged in a pc someone brought me a while ago. A lot of folks dual-boot and get the best of both worlds.. power to em. that's the great thing about this country..Freedom to choose. Linux can be a pain in the butt especially with drivers/modules, particularly ATI drivers. I've heard many cuss about nvidia drivers too but so far I've had no trouble with them. The hardware people are beginning to embrace Linux and some have opened up their code. I'm not sure if Linux will ever replace windows on the desktop but it's becoming widely accepted at the corporate/server level.
