Adam West, the ardent actor who managed to keep his tongue in cheek while wearing the iconic cowl of the Caped Crusader on the classic 1960s series Batman, has died. He was 88.
West, who was at the pinnacle of pop culture after Batman debuted in January 1966, only to see his career fall victim to typecasting after the ABC show flamed out, died Friday night in Los Angeles after a short battle with leukemia, a family spokesperson said.

I liked the man very much, but could not sit through a Batman episode, ever. His role on Family Guy will be missed.

Sorry to have him exit this way.
Unlike you edgar, I watched several Batman episodes, it was weirdly amusing.
(as a side note, I've never seen any of the big screen Batman movies with those imitation Batguys)
I watched the Batman with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson and was sorely disappointed.

May he rest in peace.
Fun Fact: BATMAN HAD A GUN (before he didn't). In fact, the popular superhero was under strong pressure/protests (along with all comic books) from churches & schools to display better morals and values for children. The simplest way to clean up Batman's image was to "ban the gun". This led to his childhood backstory about his parents getting shot in front of him and his decision to never use a gun (as though he never had in the first place).

@edgarblythe,
I grew up on Batman reruns. I remember us kids couldn't wait to get home from school to watch Batman. Same bat time. Same bat channel.

I loved Adam West as Batman. A big part of my t.v. life as a kid - and then as a babysitter - and then as a young adult. Adam West was so wonderfully dry and sly in the role.
The movies always wound up taking their Batman so seriously that all those movies never worked for me. Adam West shall always be my ages BATMAN.
Adam West always knew how to play a scene with deep cartoonish sincerity. He was good on the SImpsons too.
So long Batman, the good citizens owe you many thanks.
His acting skill, and his ability to do his own stunts endeared him to an entire generation of maturing film connoisseurs. Who can not see the greatness of Adam Wests kill as he portrays the Caped Crusader in a classic fight with his nemesis known as "The Riddler"
How many Emmies did he amass for this role ?

@Sturgis,
I watched as a kid. My first experience- that I knew of - with high camp, and I loved it. He was ridiculous and hilarious. Good at his job.
88 is a long life. Well done!

As a kid, I watched it, but only because it was all a comic book addict had for a fix on TV. I never liked the camp nature of the show, but winos have been known to drink sterno.

I prefer Kevin conroy because he played batman with enough intimidation and the sass.
And he played TV's Batman. Batman is an iconic character in pop culture. I wouldn't say he influenced it so much as he contributed to it. Not many actors can say that their careers took off with two of the most influential pop culture television shows of the 1960's, but he certainly can.
