For what we select, the lesser of evil,
There is no greater concurrence -
Of men or of man, these pious ridges of choice.
Balanced on the precarious, paused at
The road's fork, let before us -
Where or why, these higher plains
Of ideals, restive seasons,
These laden ships of aspiration -
When right has no voice, no parliament,
No plurality, no searchlight beacon
Of reason piercing these foggy mists surrounding.
For what we reserve, the greater of goods,
When there is no more, no mortal confusion
When we conclude, no allusions remain -
No allusions remain,
Grinding our ships ashore.

2004 - KAV

New poem for Monday - fresh, like Letty at a Sailor convention :-)

I loved the wordplay. I read it through a few times just to make sure where it all came into play. Very nice indeed. I'm just curious as to your emphasiszing 'no allusions remain.' The rest of the poem seems a puzzle, while avoiding being too enigmatic, so why repeat that particular line? It did stand out, and I'm still pondering. Smile

It is a puzzle, Cav, on many levels. Repeating the line has a distinct rationale. I ain't gonna tell you what it is :-)

Kelly, You must give me more time to read your Monday's piece. From thence I shall come to judge....<smile>

My first thoughts were on the interplay of 'illusion' and 'allusion.' That which is false, and that which is true, but hidden.

To begin with, the poem, holistically is so easy to read.

Assent; consent; choice; the pious; the precarious; and finally the allusion which became a will-o'-the-wisp.

and in between their lies ambition and politics.

Kelly, you have softly incorporated all of man's hopes and disillusions, but underneath there lies a steady hand for steering.

"the road's fork, let before us" is enigmatic, but this only underscores the
arcane greenery.

Enigma is my soup, Ms. Letty. Great code-breaking! Thanks for your kind words, all three of you fellow poets :-)
