This isn't meant to promote politics yet again, to turn into dueling rants, please no, but for a look at all sorts of writers, local to you or not, who you have come to like for their writing.
A guy I read once in a while, probably every two weeks, is Kelly Dessaint. He is a San Francisco cabbie who writes for a local paper. I like him for lots of reasons - he reminds me of San Francisco which I'm fond of over years, get his need to feed his family, and, I like his writing. It has a certain crispness.
