Every now and then when viewing a website my antivirus program will detect a virus or an exploit in my system. I have all the latest Microsoft security updates and patches including SP2. I have an antivirus program and use a firewall. Although my antivirus program so far seems to have caught them all I would like to know if there was anything more I could do to keep them from getting into my system to begin with. I have Windows XP and use Netscape 7.2 . Thanks Alan

further protection
Tobmanp, you have already installed nearly all the protection you need. However you did not mention having an anti-spyware program.

Spyware, as you may know is not as dangerous as a worm or virus, bothg of which could delete and corrupt your hard drive files. However, Spyware, unless you are protected can sneak into your computer, obtain private information, snoop into the websites you watch and then pester you with banners and ads and slow down your computer. 90% of all computers become infected with spyware.

Experts like www.spybot.com which is free and very effective. I like www.adware.com product. I suggest you take a look at both and choose what you like best.

By the way, I see you have just joined A2K so welcome on behalf of the 25000 members . I hope you get answers to all your problems and also hope you can contribute by sharing your expertise in the areas with which you are most skilled.

I believe the product you're thinking of is Ad-Aware, available at www.lavasoft.de (not adware.com).

Also, Spybot is available at www.safer-networking.org or www.spybot.info (not spybot.com).

Be careful about what sites you link to.

anti-spyware prgrams
Monger : Thank you very much for correcting my errors in the post to TOPMAnP. I hope he sees your post so that he can get both programs.

My first error was only a typo since www.ad-aware will get you the
free download from Snapfiles. Of course the author is Lavasoft.

I must admit that when I put both Spybot S&D and Ad-aware 6 on my PC years ago I did it the lazy way which many of us use, e.g just typed it into the Google window on the Task bar.

I see you joined the Forum a week before I did back in 2002, so congratulations on your TWO year membership and especially for your generous contribution of several thousand posts. I only wish I had the hours you seem to have on your computer. RWM

Cheers, ronmac. No foul intended, just didn't want people to be sent to sites where they'll be enticed to pay for inferior products to the excellent freeware you recommended.

I use Symantec Corporate 9.1.1400, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, Router NAT, Router Firewall, & minimize the chache on IE and Firefox to be 25 megs at the most...

This is about all you can do, besides being paranoid and checking your machine everyday or every minute
