Nobody knows, so far. The police are saying he acted alone, and say it is possible "we will never understand why he did this". Stories are emerging that he went on 72-hour alcohol and crack binges with prostitutes, robbed drug pushers at knife point, mocked Islam, which doesn't sound very "radical", so it is possible that he hatched the idea all by himself. You might count TV news as an "outside influence", I suppose.

On Channel 4 News the few nights ago they did a piece from the hotel he stayed in in Brighton. The manager and a guest were quoted as saying he was actually very jolly and friendly, and there was no indication he was about to do something like this.

Police officers then shot dead Masood. The entire attack was over within 82 seconds.

The latest arrest is the 12th to be made by the Met Police in connection with the attack. Nine people have so far been released without charge.

A 32-year-old woman arrested in Manchester remains on police bail until late March.
