Of all the themes central to life, Hawthorne's simple observation in The Scarlet Letter is the most powerful to me.
and you?
No.
But I could be lying.
I think Martin's observation of "I'm afraid you're right" in "Candide" when Candide and the gang were joyously repeating "If this is the only possible world then this is the best of all possible worlds!" is the most powerful to me.
I often rank my days on where I am between Martin and Candide.
When Hester Prynne lied to Pearl about the scarlet letter that she wore upon her breast. ".....I wear it for the sake of its gold thread..." it was the beginning of the end and the end of the beginning.
Andrian and boomer, I don't often wonder about the importance of being true...but.................................
Always True To You In My Fashion
If a custom-tailored vet
Asks me out for something wet
When the vet
Begins to pet
I cry "Hooray!"
But I'm always true to you, darling, in my fashion
Yes I'm always true to you, darling, in my way
I've been asked to have a meal
By a big tycoon in steel
If the meal
Includes a deal
Accept I may
But I'm always true to you, darling, in my fashion
Yes I'm always true to you, darling, in my way
There's an oil man known as Tex
Who is keen to give me checks
And his checks, I fear
Mean that Tex is here
To stay
But I'm always true to you, darling, in my fashion
Yes I'm always true to you, darling, in my way
Mister Harris Plutocrat
Wants to give my cheek a pat
If the Harris pat
Means a Paris hat
Baby!...
But I'm always true to you, darling, in my fashion
Yes I'm always true to you, darling, in my way
Yes I'm always true to you, darling, in my way.
Sorry, Got side tracked. <smile>
Be true to your work, your word, and your friend.
Henry David Thoreau
You know, edgar. Often it is very difficult to compare ourselves to Thoreau. He had no family, so he could visit the pond whenever he liked.
Unfortunately, too many of us here, and in real life tend to misrepresent ourselves. And what say you, edgarblythe? You have always been candid.
Be true to your school.
The Beach Boys
"The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. The opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth" - Bohr.
I would love to be true, but I'm still trying to figure out WHICH true I'm meant to be.
Oh, my Gawd, George. Will you come out from behind that soccer ball and paint me a picture in black and white?
Seriously, folks. Often it is difficult for us to tell it like it is.
Craven said that A2K was not a democracy. It isn't, of course, but it does make me wonder about how our little forum reflects the world.
llove that tune...is it a Ray Noble ? Or Cole Porter?
I am like a funhouse mirror maze. Which is reflection, which is me? And if I find me, and step apart to consider me, is it still me?
I have in my life been compared to a priest, despite my non believer's raiment. I say be straight as an arrow, sweet as nectar, firm in the path of naysayers. If you find a bit of humor throw that in there too.
Good gawd, that sounded pretentious!
Not you, Edgar, me.
And which tune is that, panz? You realize, of course, that Long Black Veil is the essence of Halloween.
Paul has been true,
JLNobody has been true,
Letty has been true,
Bi has been true,
John of Virginia has been true,
Kelly has been true blue. <smile>
And should we fail in the task that is set before us, we only can assume that the world, albeit a bit tipsy, remains true.
So many here have been true.
and true to form, Letty must eat. Damn, hate when that happens
Later...and thinking of the lunar eclipse with it's ring of red.
If the truth be told. Has it ever been?
Only when we think of never end.
A sinking sensation proclomates to all nations,
The fine art of rations and ever been.
And for the Thock of what used to be,
What three times I tell you is part of me.
and for Thok, first in line is not close
To the rhyme of last but not least in the scheme of time.
Should I have misspelled the Thock of the Realm,
It's only because I'm a wannabe.<smile>
Later, my friends.
Boomerang, I agree. Voltaire, as I understand it, was ridiculing Liebnitz in the form of Dr.Pangloss. But if this world is the only POSSIBLE world then it is the BEST possible world--at least there is no better, by definition. As such, we would be unsane not to embrace it. Nietzsche's "amor fati."
"This above all: to thine own self be true."
I would have to agree with Polonius. In life, if you are a fibber or an out right liar, at least be able to truthfully admit it to yourself even if you are unable to fess up to anyone else. If you won't be honest with yourself you can't be honest with anyone else.
Good morning, all.
JL, I didn't quite understand what you said, but you certainly did say it eloquently.
Aldistar, you are quite right. Too bad Polonius was such a jerk. <smile>
