Is the song "Girl from Ipanema " playing in every elevator scene some kind of an inside movie joke?

Probably. Wikipedia says it is the second most recorded song in history, (behind the Beates' Yesterday), and its soft bossa nova rhythm makes it perfect for calming Muzak type applications.

Apparently the elevator playing it became a joke in the Blues Brothers, and from there it really did become an inside joke in the movie industry.
