Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made; our times are in his hand who saith, whole I planned, youth shows but half; trust God: See all, nor be afraid!
Robert Browning
O, to be in England
Now that April's [February's] there,
And whoever wakes in England
Sees, some morning, unaware,
That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf
Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf,
While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough
In England - now!
from HOME - THOUGHTS FROM ABROAD
By Robert Browning (1812 - 1889)
Larry, that's beautiful ... you're making me homesick:)
That's the wise thrush; he sings each song twice over,
Lest you should think he never could recapture
The first fine careless rapture.
Home-Thoughts from Abroad. ii.
You are from there? I am merely a frustrated anglophile, itching to get back someday. My family left 400 years ago, I want to return!
There shall never be one lost good! What was, shall live as before;
The evil is null, is nought, is silence implying sound;
What was good shall be good, with for evil so much good more;
On the earth the broken arcs; in the heaven, a perfect round.
Abt Vogler. ix.
Larry, I was born in Croydon, Surrey, at a very early age:) But, when a wee lass, returned to Ireland where I was raised. So I really don't remember England, however, I would love to go back and see the old homestead.
Someday, I will!
I was very lucky to have spent more than a year in Surrey a few years ago - Egham, in a house which touched the boundary of Windsor Great Park, very close to Windsor Castle.
Larry, how long did you spend there? Is it a nice area?
I was very lucky - got to stay in a huge "house," more like an estate or mansion - went jogging through the park, swimming pool (always too cold though) and sauna. It was a beautiful area. Stayed there off and on for a year or so. Just wish I had as much knowledge in history and english lit as I have now, I missed so much!
Good for you Larry, sounds like a beatuful place. Someday I'll get there, the good Lord willing and the creek don't rise:)
