I love both the cover and the book, The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein.

It's not actually about a dog?

@edgarblythe,
Oh..I looked it up. Don't want to divert thread, but that is such a fascinating subject! I had several friends with terminal AIDS when the cocktail happened. We have discussed how jarring it actually was to reverse their lives and adjust to living with a future again.

@dlowan,
I had one person close in life succumb to aids. I often think back to the fear and knee jerk reactions to aids when it first became a major concern. Sad that people react from fear without seeking to understand.

I inherited a set of French paperbacks from the 60s from my mum which all had lovely covers, very much of that time. They're all in boxes back in the home country though. So is most of my "library", or the parts of it I didn't bring to the local anarchists' give-away shop when I emigrated.

From among the books I have here, I like the cover of this Dutch photo book most:

@edgarblythe,
Here in Oz we benefitted from seeing how badly it went in the US before it hit hard here.

There were people of great vision and an extremely activist gay community. Couldn't help the street bigotry....and I saw first hand some health care professionals behaving badly, but overall the systemic response was great.

@nimh,
That street is smooth as silk, compared with the one in and out of my neighborhood.

I brought this back from Hamburg 1983 or 84.

It taught me a lot about what my parents and their families experienced.

Many things my paternal grandfather talked to me about in the 1970's are pictured in the book. Homes gone. Bunkers still standing. The cover is not beautiful but I love it for what it forces me to think about. It helped me understand my grandmother shaking her head for the last 15 or so years of her life.

@ehBeth,
For the same reason I love Grapes of Wrath. It has been published many times and some of the covers are great.

In the interests of full disclosure, I know both the author and the cover artist for this indie work, which is partly about a lost identity.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but the real reason it has survived several purges is that the cover makes me so happy.
