I now have hundreds of deleted items in "deleted items". Now how do I get rid of them once and for all. for good, zilch?
Select them all and click delete, either on your keyboard or on the screen.
To select them all just click on one and press control a.

To highlight just a few of them instead of all of them, use the CTRL key and SHIFT key on your keyboard while clicking on different items. Clicking on one item at a time while holding down CTRL, highlights each one and keeps them highlighted. Clicking on one item, then moving down (or up) several items, then clicking on another item while holding down SHIFT, will highlight those two items and all the ones in between.
cntrl + A then press delete or press backspace or right click on it and select delete
you can drag them to the trash can, which I hold them just a little before I do the empty trash
