Replacing and wiring a dimmer

There are 3 sets of cables, 2 black and 1 red in each. The dimmer has a C, L1 and L2 connections. At the moment, it's wired like this:
3blacks ( no power) wired together
3 blacks into C
3 reds into L2
but the light won't turn on or off and doesn't dim.

Thanks Dale, I tried that but no luck. Looks like I might have to get an electrician in. Tried new dimmer (with schematics) and shorted the system!

Yea Diba that stuff tricky, one reason probly so little response yet

Are you rewiring or is it a new house

Just one incidental: Do you think, supposing you an esl, that I shoulda spelled out 'probably'

In the ast 17 years I've saved some four million keystrokes hereabout but made at least 21 enemies
