Does anybody know how to shut this new firewall off? I have disabled it in the Security Center at the Control Panel but it is still shown as running. Also, I can't shut off the Virus Alert either. There is no Recommendations button to activate the shut off!. Microsoft is punting right now--they said to unistall SP 2. Surely, I can't be the only with this problem. It occurs on a Toshiba laptop running Windows XP Professional. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are you logged in as Administrator??
I am an administrator
Yes, I am logged in as an administrator. I have been through all the obvious stuff with the MS techies, such as they are. This is something that none of them has even gotten close too. The Security Center Window basically seems to not even care whether the Firewall exists or not. And the 'missing' recommendations button is a real tipoff that something serious is amiss. This has occurred with two different installs of SP 2 on a new machine--one download through MS Update and when that seemed off, I got a copy from MS on CD-ROM and put that in. Same deal.
you can run "msconfig" from the command prompt, click on "services" tab and then find the service for "windows firewall/internet connection sharing" and uncheck it. after you reboot, it should disable the firewall service.
