Awww... I just read the paper today said he was merely in the hospital. Rest in peace, hero.

The last of the Mercury seven, end of an era and a time when space exploration held near to everybody's attention.

Sad to have him leave us.

He was a genuinely urbane man, a true nice guy. I saw him on television in the 50s, when he appeared on the Groucho Marx program, You Bet Your Life. He was paired with a little kid, who was obviously overawed by Glenn's Marine dress uniform. Of course, no one then knew where his career was going.

@edgarblythe,
My wife and I had the opportunity to visit Kennedy Space Center and museum, and also the Smithsonian. They were really our heroes, and the world applauded.

The word hero easily applied nowadays; John Glen a true American hero... the example all other Americans to emulate. Few will rise to such level. He will be sorely missed.

@giujohn,
Imet him once and had him sign a menu from an environmentl engineering meeting in the ground water center in Columbus many years ago. It was maybe 3 years after he was elected to Congress and was doing a meet and greet in tech centers in southern Ohio . He was very gracious when he talked with my group of students and was telling us jokes about hanging around with geologists in the program.
He was very very gracious, he never made himself the center of attention, when he easily could have.

God speed John Glenn.

@farmerman,
In the the summer of 1962 I sent away for an autographed picture of John Glenn. I remember bringing it to class for show and tell in September... I was a pretty big deal that day.
