Well, those laughable UN efforts in Middle East:
- UNDOF was established in 1974 following the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights;
Strength: 1,043 troops, assisted by some 80 military observers of UNTSO's Observer Group Golan;
and supported by 37 international civilian personnel
and 93 local civilian staff;
Contributors of Military Personnel: Austria, Canada, Japan, Nepal, Poland, Slovak Republic ;
Fatalities: 38 military personnel
1 international civilian staff
1 local staff
- UNIFIL was created in 1978 to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, restore the international peace and security, and help the Lebanese Government restore its effective authority in the area;
Strength: 1,995 troops, assisted by some 50 military observers of UNTSO; and supported by 106 international civilian personnel and 297 local civilian staff;
Contributors of Military Personnel: France, Ghana, India, Ireland, Italy, Poland and Ukraine;
Fatalities 244 troops, 2 military observers; 2 international civilian staff, 1 local staff = 249 Total
Set up in 1948, UNTSO was the first peacekeeping operation established by the United Nations. UNTSO military observers remain in the Middle East to monitor ceasefires, supervise armistice agreements, prevent isolated incidents from escalating and assist other UN peacekeeping operations in the region;
Strength: 153 military observers, supported by 89 international civilian personnel and 121 local civilian staff;
Contributors of Military Personnel: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russian Federation, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and United States;
Fatalities 17 military personnel, 13 military observers, 6 international staff
3 local civilian staff = 39 total
Howwever, all these obviously weren't accused this time, but some from the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
Quote:Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, was established by United Nations General Assembly resolution 302 (IV) of 8 December 1949 to carry out direct relief and works programmes for Palestine refugees. The Agency began operations on 1 May 1950. In the absence of a solution to the Palestine refugee problem, the General Assembly has repeatedly renewed UNRWA's mandate, most recently extending it until 30 June 2005.
Since its establishment, the Agency has delivered its services in times of relative calm in the Middle East, and in times of hostilities. It has fed, housed and clothed tens of thousands of fleeing refugees and at the same time educated and given health care to hundreds of thousands of young refugees.
UNRWA is unique in terms of its long-standing commitment to one group of refugees and its contributions to the welfare and human development of four generations of Palestine refugees. Originally envisaged as a temporary organization, the Agency has gradually adjusted its programmes to meet the changing needs of the refugees. Today, UNRWA is the main provider of basic services - education, health, relief and social services - to over 4.1 million registered Palestine refugees in the Middle East.
