JERUSALEM (AP)--The Israeli army released video footage Friday taken by an unmanned aircraft showing what appeared to be Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip loading rockets into a vehicle marked "U.N."

The black-and-white footage, taken by a drone - or unmanned aircraft - flying over the Gaza Strip, showed the militants driving off in the white van, with " U.N." marked in black on its roof.

Israel has often accused militants of using United Nations vehicles and headquarters to launch attacks. U.N. officials were not immediately available for comment.

Israel has also accused officials of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, responsible for caring for thousands of refugees in the Gaza Strip, of turning a blind eye to militant activities in their vicinity, and of clear bias against Israel.

Israel uses drones to monitor activities in Gaza. The footage provides soldiers and pilots real-time pictures of what is happening on the ground.

Friday's footage was released while the army launched a widescale operation in Jebaliya and nearby towns in an attempt to halt Palestinian rocket attacks on towns in Israel. Those rocket attacks killed two Israeli preschoolers Wednesday.

Thirty-five Palestinians (almost all armed terrorists) have been killed in the army operation.

As you may have heard, Israel is currently under a daily "home-made" missile attack, issued from Aza. The KASSAM's (the name of the missile) have already killed several innocent Israeli citizens, including young children (only a couple of days ago, a four year old and a two year old). Since Israel is planning on evicting the settlers in the Gaza strip, the bombing of the Israeli town Shderot is unexplained. Moreover, the town has nothing to do with the settelments.

Some may point out the "suprising" fact that the Palestinians, with no significant relevance to the so-called occupied territories, are using terrorism to hurt, injure and terrorize the Israeli citizens. Others state that the violent attack is an attempt to make the Israeli forces flee with "bullets shooting over their heads".

UN checking claims Kassams transported in UN vehicle

Oct. 1, 2004 20:42 | Updated Oct. 2, 2004 19:28
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amir Mizroch and Ofer Barsadeh, THE JERUSALEM POST Oct. 1, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UN officials said Saturday they are investigating a claim by the Israeli military that Palestinian terrorists transported a rocket in a vehicle with UN markings, but accused Israel of having made false allegations in the past.

On Friday, the IDF released video footage taken from an unmanned aircraft, or drone, flying over the Jebalya refugee camp. The blurred black-and-white video showed three men walking toward the U.N. vehicle, including one who carried an elongated object. The army said the object was a rocket.

Peter Hansen, the head of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), said Saturday that "we are doing our best to see what the basis for the allegations is," and that U.N. ambulance drivers were being questioned. The UNRWA is an agency which assists Palestinian refugees in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Speaking to The Jerusalem Post on Saturday, Hansen said he was on his way to Jerusalem hopefully to be able to see higher resolution footage of the incident. He added that he has instigated an investigation of all ambulance drivers and orderlies. "This won't be the first time false allegations have been made against us. Everyone who has seen the footage has told me the object looks more like a folded-up stretcher than anything else. Especially since it was being carried with one hand. A Kassam rocket would be too heavy for a man to carry with one hand.

"Unless we are talking about Goliath, (he) could hardly carry a Kassam rocket as a light object in one hand," Hansen told The Associated Press.

According to the IDF website, the Kassam rocket is about 2 meters long and weighs on average 5.5 KG (about 12 pounds).

"This is not the first time that we have allegations that turn out to be false or rather (are) based on very, very insufficient evidence," he said.

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Gillerman, has called on UN Secretary General Koffi Anan to fire Peter Hansen, the head of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) following the publication of video footage showing Palestinian terrorists storing what appears to be a Kassam rocket inside a UN-marked vehicle in the northern Gaza Strip.

"We view this incident very seriously, and I intend on Monday to turn to the UN Secretary General with a very strong complaint. I will ask him to come to the necessary conclusions regarding UNRWA, to check the incident and establish a serious committee of inquiry that will get to the bottom of this thing. It is unacceptable that the UN, which is supposed to further the goals of peace, will turn into a shelter for murderers," Gillerman said.

Gillerman also called Hansen "anti-Israeli," Israel Radio reported.

Israel has accused terrorists of using U.N. vehicles and offices to launch attacks. Israel has also accused UNRWA officials of turning a blind eye to terrorist activities in their vicinity, and of bias against Israel.

Israel uses drones to monitor activities in the crowded Gaza refugee camps. The footage provides soldiers and pilots real-time pictures of what is happening on the ground.

Friday's footage was released while the army launched a wide scale operation in the Jebalya refugee camp and nearby towns in an attempt to halt Palestinian rocket attacks on towns in Israel. Those rocket attacks killed two Israeli preschoolers Wednesday.

I would not at all be surprised if the allegations are true. The UN has time and time again shown where it's sympathies lie

Stop the sarcastic bullshit. Is it a fact or is it not. That the UN is biased against Israel.

At first the UN complaint against Israel that its troops had taken over UN-run schools in the Gaza Strip, while children were still in class, and used them as firing positions for tanks.

"They have now taken positions in these three schools and using them as a military camp for their ongoing campaign, using them also as firing positions," the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said in Geneva.

"UNRWA strongly protests the totally unacceptable misuse of clearly marked UN installations and calls on the Israeli military to respect the neutrality of these places," said agency spokesman Matthias Burchard.

The troublesome fact is that the UN's motives are quite ambivalent.

On one hand they claim to support peace in the region, but on the other hand, while hiding behind the mask of humanitarianism, they support and aid attacks against Israeli citizens.

Since my ties to Israel are very tight (I actually "live" here), I must add that this is not the first time the UN is found (or accused of) helping carry out terrorist acts and, if to be more realistic, helping kill people.

About two years ago, the Hizbalah kidnapped and murdered three 20 year old soldiers patrolling in the border. This happened while the UN forces were there (if I recall correctly, there was footage of the UN's overlooking). It is claimed that the terrorists used UN's vehicles to carry out their vile deeds smoothly.

Another time, after an Israeli APC was bombed and 7 were killed, the Palestinian terrorists wandered the streets of X (I don't remember the name) in UN vehicles and collected pieces of the soldier's bodies (for future blackmail). [I must add that when this happened, I almost burst into tears, although I am not the type to do so and no one I know was hurt. The fact that the terrorists can be so despicable as to show (off) the head of another human being, while smiling and promising for more, is startling].

I do not know if the UN is directly involved in these acts, but I do know that the Palestinians are using the UN as a mean of attacking, killing and kidnapping Israelis and getting away with it.

Perhaps the UN should concentrate on global interests, as ironically stated in their website, and not on their own dubious ones.

Welcome to A2K Jerry. Your last sentence had its own irony. As far as global interests go, the danger in the Israel/Palestine conflict makes the UN efforts so far rather laughable.

Well, those laughable UN efforts in Middle East:
- UNDOF was established in 1974 following the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights;
Strength: 1,043 troops, assisted by some 80 military observers of UNTSO's Observer Group Golan;
and supported by 37 international civilian personnel
and 93 local civilian staff;
Contributors of Military Personnel: Austria, Canada, Japan, Nepal, Poland, Slovak Republic ;
Fatalities: 38 military personnel
1 international civilian staff
1 local staff

- UNIFIL was created in 1978 to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, restore the international peace and security, and help the Lebanese Government restore its effective authority in the area;
Strength: 1,995 troops, assisted by some 50 military observers of UNTSO; and supported by 106 international civilian personnel and 297 local civilian staff;
Contributors of Military Personnel: France, Ghana, India, Ireland, Italy, Poland and Ukraine;
Fatalities 244 troops, 2 military observers; 2 international civilian staff, 1 local staff = 249 Total

Set up in 1948, UNTSO was the first peacekeeping operation established by the United Nations. UNTSO military observers remain in the Middle East to monitor ceasefires, supervise armistice agreements, prevent isolated incidents from escalating and assist other UN peacekeeping operations in the region;
Strength: 153 military observers, supported by 89 international civilian personnel and 121 local civilian staff;
Contributors of Military Personnel: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russian Federation, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and United States;
Fatalities 17 military personnel, 13 military observers, 6 international staff
3 local civilian staff = 39 total

Howwever, all these obviously weren't accused this time, but some from the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
Quote:
Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, was established by United Nations General Assembly resolution 302 (IV) of 8 December 1949 to carry out direct relief and works programmes for Palestine refugees. The Agency began operations on 1 May 1950. In the absence of a solution to the Palestine refugee problem, the General Assembly has repeatedly renewed UNRWA's mandate, most recently extending it until 30 June 2005.

Since its establishment, the Agency has delivered its services in times of relative calm in the Middle East, and in times of hostilities. It has fed, housed and clothed tens of thousands of fleeing refugees and at the same time educated and given health care to hundreds of thousands of young refugees.

UNRWA is unique in terms of its long-standing commitment to one group of refugees and its contributions to the welfare and human development of four generations of Palestine refugees. Originally envisaged as a temporary organization, the Agency has gradually adjusted its programmes to meet the changing needs of the refugees. Today, UNRWA is the main provider of basic services - education, health, relief and social services - to over 4.1 million registered Palestine refugees in the Middle East.

Jerry,

I don't understand how people like yourself, who live in the region, can hold to such extreme viewpoints when the cost is so high.

That so many people aren't willing to see past hatred and fear means that the violence will continue and people will keep dying.

I wish you would all just stop!

The head of UNRWA, Peter Hansen, lodged a strong protest on Monday. He said the agency had determined the footage showed the object being loaded into the vehicle was a stretcher, and demanded an apology from Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom.

"It is appalling that with the serious conflict now raging in the northern Gaza Strip ... the government of Israel would put out such deliberately inciteful, false and malicious propaganda," Hansen said in a statement.

A Foreign Ministry source said Israel stood by its accusation. Military officials said the footage had been analysed by experts and they were certain it was a rocket.

With all do respect, I believe that peace with the Palestinians, at this time, is impossible. What brings me to this assumption is the blury cause the Palestinians are fighting for; they claim Israel has taken a certain piece of land from them, and now, when Sharon says he is going to with-draw from the "stolen" areas, the violence increases. Why now?

Five times have the arab states grouped to destroy the state of Israel and toss all Israelis to the sea*. All lands supposedly "stolen" are lands acquired with the blood of soldiers. History proves that only the arab states have recieved back land for peace** by terror.

Personally, my opinion is quite irregular, so I doubt if I could speek for any group of people in Israel: I believe the war is a religous war, camouflaged as a conflict over area. The Islamic leaders are, and have always been, calling for the murder of ALL Israeli people (and some claim this is in the name of self-defence Mad ).

[The Muslim laws state that every place where a Muslim set foot is forbidden for the unbelieveres (Christians and Jews) and the Muslim can do anything, including murder, in order to conquer the area. (If someone can accquire the version, I would be greatful.]

I too wish we could all live in peace. The Muslims have the whole of Africa and some of Asia. Israel is tiny (parks in the US are bigger). What do we have other then Israel? The land of our ancestors? Why can't the Palestinians move to Jordan? Or Egypt? [Or Sudan? Or Lebanon? Or Saudi Arabia? Or Syreia? Or Yemen?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* A quote from a Egyptian caricature from 1967.

** Is there really peace with Egypt? Egypt does not launch missiles at Israel but many weapons are transferred from the Rafich border, to Aza, and then to the bodies of Israeli citizens. On the other hand, peace with King Abdallha of Jordan is stable, maybe because he knows what it's like to have Palestinian terror in your country (Black September... Would someone care to remind us what Abdallha did?)

Well, might be:
Quote:
On Tuesday, the military removed the video from its Web site.

"The Israeli Defense Forces are reviewing the original analysis of the footage, in which UNRWA vehicles are seen involved in suspicious activity in the combat zone in Gaza," an army statement said.

An Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a study of the video indicated the object may not have been a rocket and could have been a stretcher. The official said no definite conclusion has been reached.

...

Burchard [UNRWA spokesperson] said UNRWA was able to confirm quickly that the object was a stretcher. ``We are therefore quite astounded that the IDF, with its superior technology, was not able to do so before launching its campaign,'' he said.

The claims may have endangered UNRWA staff, Burchard added. ``Once an allegation is out there, it maybe gives soldiers the inclination to shoot first before asking questions,'' he said.

U.S. Vetoes U.N. Resolution

Condemnation of Israel's Gaza Incursion Called 'Lopsided'

By Colum Lynch
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, October 6, 2004; Page A20

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 5 -- The United States vetoed a Security Council resolution condemning Israel for its incursion into the Gaza Strip, calling the resolution "lopsided and unbalanced" because it failed to mention Palestinian rocket attacks against Israeli civilians that triggered the action.

The resolution, which was co-sponsored by Pakistan and Algeria, obtained 11 votes in favor Tuesday. Britain, Germany and Romania abstained, citing concern that the text did not fault Palestinian attacks. But the U.S. veto, the seventh cast by the Bush administration on a resolution that condemned Israeli actions, blocked its adoption.

John C. Danforth, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said the resolution would undermine efforts to restore peace in the Middle East. "The resolution today encourages the terrorists; it will not do anything to prevent a predictable response," he said.

The Palestinian representative, Nasser Kidwa, said after the vote that "this is another sad day for the Security Council" for not calling for "cessation of the bloodshed of the Palestinian people in northern Gaza." He said he is considering calling for an emergency session of the U.N. General Assembly to press for Israel's condemnation.

Israeli forces launched an offensive in northern Gaza late last month to stop Palestinian rocket attacks against Israeli civilians. Five Israelis were killed in Palestinian mortar and rocket attacks in the past three months. On Sept. 28, Palestinians killed two children and wounded 10. Since then, Israeli forces have killed 82 Palestinians, the United Nations said.

The UN is at it again.
