Actually, the formula is GOD = FAITH. That's because nobody can see, prove or produce their god. It's imaginary.
There have been research done at Stanford and Yale Universities on prayer. They have shown that third party prayers do not work. They believe praying for oneself helps, because they have positive mental impact that helps one's own body heal. Also knowing that others are praying for you also helps.

That would account for people's propensity to make idols, paintings, statues, ceremonies, sacrifices, martyrdom, etc., but what accounts for such incomprehensible behavior all through human history, if it is in fact - imaginary?

You've postulated that belief offers comfort as an explanation. How does that jibe with the evidence? Does it explain the jihadist who blows himself up?
