Can anyone explain this strange little piece of law to me?

His school is so small that everyone, including the director, simply called him what he chose to be called. This is his 6th year there and the first year (new teachers) that there has been any confusion.

It happened at football too -- new coach.

So now pretty much his entire social circle knows his name is Mike and not Joe. For whatever reason it really bothers him. I know he is careful about who he explains his past to and being called Mike publicly put him in the position to do some explaining.

If I'd been more forward thinking I most likely could have prevented it but honestly, he's just Joe now and nobody, including me, even thinks about Mike.

I brought up changing it legally after school today and you could see the relief on his face.

It is aggravating but not insurmountable. We'll take the long way if we have to.

The good thing is that 'Mo' is well grounded and loved and he gets it.

I don't think he's hiding or ashamed about his name but that he just doesn't feel like his history is available for public consumption because most people don't get it. Among us, it's easy, but even I've given up trying to explain it to others.

For example:

I was driving him to school the other day and he said something and I cracked up and said "Sometimes you sound so much like your mom!"

And he said "Well, she is my mom..."

And I said "I know..."

And he said "And so are you..."

And I said "Of course..."

It was just a nice moment.

But him having to explain that kind of moment to a bunch of 15 year olds is a lot more complicated. It just leads to other questions and he doesn't want to share that with everyone.

Changing his name to the one everyone knows him by gives him the option to share or not.
