A friend of mine challenged me to write something about shadows versus stolen souls. While not my favourite piece, I thought I'd post it anyway for comment.
Wanton dances shook the coals
as the Shadows,
guardians of the stolen souls,
surveyed the fresh crop,
ripe for torment, anguish and pain.
How they laughed as fiery rain
pierced the ghostly flesh.
They cackled at the souls diress.
One soul sat, a stoic among the rest.
He did not move, did not flinch,
did not open an eye. "What jest is this,"
the Shadows asked, "no pain, no stench, no wailing cry?"
The stolen soul looked up.
"Gentlemen, my spirit has for many years
eluded you. I have been called by many names.
To the ancients, a prophet,
To Shakespeare, a merchant's muse,
To the earth, a leader, a lover,
messenger of peace.
I have known I would be stolen in this time,
for many years. I do not fear you,
I will not die, for stolen souls
are simply shadows in the light.
We're not that different really,
you and I, are we?"
Interesting piece Cav! It kind of reminds me of translated shakespeare!
I don't get it... Maybe I wasn't supposed to :-) Seems forced to me. Is this a final product or something under revision?
kellyvinal, I'm going with forced, which is why I didn't like it too much. It's always that way for me when I write something on another person's suggestion or challenge. I don't really plan to revise it.
There is never bad poetry, cavfancier. A poem is a slice of the soul. I have never done well with other people's ideas in my own poetry - probably because of that.
Mercurial me, I have changed my mind, and will revise this. I'm thinking Perseus + Damon/Charon + the Abramaic prophets. This might take some time...
Hmmm....... What are you refering to when you say shadow vs. stolen soul? Is it a book?
Rosslyn, welcome to A2K. Actually, "shadows vs. stolen souls" was a theme given to me by a fellow writer, as a challenge. I haven't had time to edit the poem yet, but I will soon.
very interesting name! And very well done poem as well. Thanks for the welcome too!
I echo the welcome, Rosslyn :-)
