I need help with my USB ports...

I have windows XP, and I got a webcam, but I haven't had anything that plugs into the USB ports before this, so this is the first time I found out, my USB ports just dont work, at all, it doesn't even recognize anything when u plug it in to the USB

are your usb ports hooked up inside the machine?
