I used some of the methods I found here to get rid of a browser "hijacker" or spyware. Everything now seems to be fine EXCEPT....I can no longer open a web page from the FILE>OPEN>type in address. I get an error message saying "Cannot find.... Make sure the path or internet address is correct". I'm guessing I have some setting screwed up. Any ideas?

Try to fix IE
Insert your operating system CD (XP,2000...) in your CD-ROM
(click Exit if installation wizard starts)
Then click Start/Run and type sfc /scannow
It should fix all your system files including IE
