Could someone please tell me how to stop my C: drive folder from popping up automatically onto the screen every time I log onto my computer. It started doing this a few weeks ago. It is driving me nuts. I have Windows XP Home Edition
ericcah,
I don't have an answer for you, but if misery loves company, maybe this will be of some comfort.
Ever since I downloaded SP2, whenever I boot up now, "My Documents" folder automatically launches.
Maybe these anomalies are related (given the similar timeframes to our problems).
I am going to try an email to the Windows Support to see if they have a response....and if they do, I'll post it here.
Try this, ericcah
Based on my experience, this issue is caused by an incorrect registry content.
To troubleshoot this issue, I suggest we perform the following steps:
1. Click Start, click Run and type "REGEDIT" (without the quotes). The Registry Editor will open.
2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
3. Highlight WINLOGON folder and double click USERINIT in the right pane.
4. Make sure that the value data is "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe," (Note: Be sure to leave the comma at the end.)
5. Click OK and close Registry Editor. Restart the computer to test the issue.
The above instructions came from a Windows Support Tech. It precisely fixed my problem........as it turns out, I had some additional text appearing AFTER the text he indicated should be there. Once I deleted the extra text, the start screen launched normally without automatically launching/opening "My Folders". You might want to give this possibility a check.
