Ribbons in the Wind

Ribbons in the wind.

A tired pillow, a bit sunken from the pile
That lay in disuse for so long- and now
Someone must here decide it's fate.

Then, too, the ruffles. Bows of wood, or satin
Stained by years of hanging on the wall.
Of these?? It is I they interrogate.

A load of drawers, jammed with books, and the
Bible, read everyday. You could tell, the pages frayed
And many promises marked with pen.

Doilies no one uses anymore- finely crafted in delicate
Threads, so beautiful. And hummingbirds galore.
They hang from chains or are glassed in.

A candy cache!! Such fancy jars, with peppermint and
Licorice, butterscotch and clove. Some holders are little
Music boxes, sweetening a melody!

'Mongst the gloves and stockings, needle and threads,
There lies the words. Words sent from all over the world
Of family. On cards and plaques, a rhapsody.

But down comes the curtains, along with their dust, to go
To a new home, I trust. The walls are over-painted,
The ?'fixing's' all changedÂ… with new stuff.

Don't they know how one day, when the next tenant moves
To the land where they carry no boxesÂ… all these treasures,
New, will go on too, as life tells them, 'it is enough'?

Scraps of notes and of perfume on old sweaters, are the company
I am keeping today. Along with the realization-- sometime,
Even I - to be whisked away.

The vapor of touching has vanished, leaving bits
Of the remnants of clay. We little need it, as my
Heart leaves me to know. Not forgetting she came by this way.

This was wonderful, TOL; it is so impressive, how you can write so poignantly without ever giving a hint of self-pity. Masterfully written Very Happy.
