She walked right up to her and spoke.
"How are you this evening?"
An older woman speaking to the younger girl is
unafraid, confident, and sympathetic to all her issues.
"I'm ok", the girl gave a quick and fading smile.
Sitting there on the bus bench, they might have been mother and
daughter- it was that kind of scene- and that kind of pleasant
evening. But the older lady was wearing the uniform of the Salvation Army, and the girl had a fuschia tied-top on, little more than a bra.
Her black skirt was split all the way to her silver panties,
highlighting the silver strap sandals on her pretty little feet.
A bus was coming in the distant traffic and the woman stirred to
gather her things and board.
"Aren't you coming?" she asked the girl-
"Is this the one where you take to go home?"
The girl flashed the sad smile again, "Nah, I am waiting for
Jack- he is coming back" she quipped.
"Well- I guess I'll be seeing you...this is my bus..." she
weakly offered a goodby... "Uh...?"
"Penny"...the girl said- "names Penny, now".
"So, goodnight, Penny" the generous woman said lightly. "With the
last sun on your hair, I would have thought they named you
Golden." She gave a wide, loving smile, as she headed to the bus
doors.
"I was golden"....she trailed off, speaking to the disappearing
day..."I was gold... but I got spent....."

Very nice! I liked how nice they were to each other despite their different circumstances - it was unexpected.
I really liked that, Tol; it captured my imagination... the gag at the end was unusual, but meaningful, too.
