"Shaggy was supposed to have the beer."
But the car was on the lawn, Shaggy was on the stoop, empty-handed.
"Dog-git Shaggy, you the PITS. Now I'm thirsty and Cool got the last suds in the bank!" "OHYEH" Shaggy heaved his frame around and went to his trunk. "Hey Bo, hep me here", but Bo was already lifting his side. They brought the keg into the kitchen and pulled some chips from under the cupboards. Dolly pulled out the bags of peanuts, and Shaggy was already searching the fridge for dips. "You bring the poker chips?" Shag asked Cool. "Yeah, but we don need that deck of yours, it's too dern greasy," spouted Cool. "I got cards," yelled Dolly from the porch… as she went to pull out another table. "Here comes the gang in Vic's car," she informed them- and soon the rickety old house was reeking from the spilled suds and the leaky toilet. "I know just what we need to get this game off the ground guys," grinned Vic. It is "Big Bob's band" Vic laughed as he clapped Bob on the back.
Well, the bass player was there, also the keyboard, but a coupla
guitars were silent tonight.
"Hey, go call the other guys, Bob, Maybe we can get this old
floor ta squeakin'!
"Ahh, ah dunno," Bob put 'im off- "I kinda promised the guys the weekend off." "But we kin play w' what we got??"
Excited, all the card throwers stopped to eat, and watch the
makeshift bandstand being set up. At last...the first whine of the steel...and the clinking sound of the drums- HEAVY METAL!!
But just then, as the boys tuned up the band...Dolly watched as a car
roll into the front yard. The man stretched his long legs from the drivers door, and with a flourish that slammed the car door and waved to the house at the same time-- his crooked and handsome smile had a confident air.
Seth came up onto the porch, nodding toward Dolly, then began to
speak to the guys one by one.
"Hey, nobody told me, we wuz gonna have a party?" He looked
briefly at Dolly and back to Bob and Vic.
"AHH, no party, Set...Just a leetle cards and some "tears" n'
suds music." He grinned with an air of casual dismissal.
"s'awrite," Seth drawled very accomodatingly, and rocked back in
a chair, fit to tilt it over.
Vic pulled him a suds from the keg, and squatted down by the
drums.
He actually wondered what was going through the big mans mind.
Not one to share a lot, all the guys knew Seth considered Dolly
to be his woman. He came and went on her property as his own, and
lately, there had been rumors of discontent. None of the guys knew the whole story...but Dolly had dropped bits in conversation here and there.
Even some of the guys had accused her of permanent PMS, because
she was so brittle at work, and angry over problems with Seth.
Vic knew she loved him. She loved him with her life, breath, and
all she could share.
But she never received the same assurance and attention from him.
He came in for some hugging and loving when he wanted, and often,
did not even tell her when he was trucking out of town...sometimes
gone 2 days before she found out.

Vic also knew that Dolly had tried to break off relations with
Seth a couple of times...but he would bring her a trinket from
whatever town he was visiting, and melt her heart that he thought
of her.
Vic guessed by the way Dolly acted when Seth sidled up to her in
semi-private situations...that Dolly could not control her
emotions about Seth too well. She was just 'GONE' on him.
That really made Vic kinda sad. He could be 'gone' on Dolly himself, in a heartbeat...if she would just give him a second look.
Tonight, she was wearing the mane of chestnut brown hair in a
french braid, loosly done. She wore a red headband with beads,
and a red, soft top… low cut enough that he could see the swell of her bosom spilling out the top. It was really seductive. Shrinking down to her small waistline, she was wearing a red beaded belt to match the
headband. This-- paired with the slim white slacks and the tanned
bare feet...with their bright red polished toes and little
glittering toe rings.. she was a really good looking woman.

Seth rose from the chair, as the boys began to whine out a
melody. Vic saw him reach for her arm gently and pull her into
the kitchen.
Nothing forceful, nothing out of order...only Vic could FEEL the
command in the man's moves. His look and his manner were smooth
and gently requesting...but the air that came with his presence
dared any to say NO to him.

Vic could not see inside the kitchen...but he could see shadows
in the ray of light beaming from the hall across the darker
kitchen. The shadow looked like one person, as Vic knew, he had
pulled her into an embrace and was probably kissing her into
total submission.
He turned his head away, and went for another suds.
Now, he knew he must draw the line after this one. Because he
doubted if they were going to get to bunk on the back of Dolly's
extra rooms tonight.

Bob and the boys finished playing the round they were grinding out...and stopped the noise for awhile, to get some more beer and
chips.
"Hey, let's get some cards goin' here..." Scruffy wanted.
And a few of them sat over at the card table.

Just then, Dolly appeared at the door, and was wearing a
different sweater over her clothes.
"You guys, play and drink as long as you like. There are
mattresses in back as you know, if any of you need them. Seth is
going to take me somewhere to see something and we will be back
before long."
Vic knew Dolly would not climb into bed with Seth and shut the
door to her room, in front of all of them. Whether they thought
she regularly slept with him or not, it was not her style to be
so open with her private life.
Vic figured he was taking her to a motel for a night of sex.
"Oh what the hell," he thought, nothing ventured nothing gained.
He popped up and stated, "Well, just run out on your card game,
why don't you?" He grinned that personable grin that turned most ladies on...and saw Dolly look anxious and undecided. A dark glower came over
Seth's face, as he turned to go and took Dolly's arm. "Hey, you
guys got her all the time while I got to work". he mockingly
complained.

Seemed like since he was being so soft and cordial, Dolly tried
to change his mind. "Seth, why don't we go tomorrow? Get out the
chips and let's beat up on these guys for some pennies."
Seth seemed to get a little darker.
He turned on her, and spoke more short than I have ever heard
him..."WOMAN, are you goin' with me?"
The tone startled Dolly, and she stood quietly for a moment. "I
don't think so, for you sound too demanding, Seth."
That said, he spun on his heel...looking for all the world like
he would drag her...but instead walked sharply to his car and
sped away...without another word.

There were tears rimming Dolly's lashes, but Vic stepped quickly
to her side, and run his arm around her waist. "Here, here, now.
THAT ain't worth it!!"
Vic steered her over to the keg and induced her to have another
draft. They sat quietly together on the edge of the porch
swing...until the guys finished another song...then they all
gathered at the card table.

The games did not go too well though. Seems all had just lost the
spirit of the evening...and some of them had too much to drink.
But most of them had not had enough.
One by one they drifted home.
Finally, only Dolly, Cathy and Vic were remaining.
"Hey, you want me to go on and let Cathy spend the night here
with you, Huh?"
Cathy looked immediately contrite.
"Oh, I can't" she explained. "I don't have a sitter for Mikey
past one, and I really need to go on."
"Sure, sure," Dolly assured her..."Please don't give it another
thought. Vic will be here awhile, until I can get sleepy...or he
can just bunk over, whatever..."
That little statement gave Vic a pulse that made all his nerves
jump.

Cathy proceeded to gather her things and Dolly walked out to the
car part way, with her. Coming back, she bent over by the porch
steps, and picked something up.
"Whatcha got there?" Vic asked her, as she straightened and looked
funny.
"It looks like a little packet of drugs" But no one thought the guys we run with used anything but a little grass occasionally. Toking a joint wasn't TOO bad, but this was white powder...and a pretty sizable packet of it...as money goes. "Who do you suppose? Dolly said... and she handed the packet to Vic.

Now, I know coke when I see it, and I knew this was coke. Enough
to make several lines and really get high.
That made me wonder if Seth intended to take Dolly somewhere and
really get her hooked.
Thinking that way, kinda got me mad. but I could not prove whose
it was, or what was going to be done with it.
So I asked Dolly, "Shouldn't we just flush this?" "I sure don't
want it".
"What if whose ever it was, asks me about it?"
"Hell, tell 'em you flushed it!!" I said.
She grinned and went into the toilet. Not much later, I heard the
flush and smiled as I pulled another draft from the dwindling
keg.
"Ok," she said. "What would you like to do? Listen to the
stereo?" "Let's just sit out here on the swing and talk, if that's ok with you, Dolly?"
She appeared pleased that I wanted her presence, also...that I
had asked her so sweetly, with no pressure.
Sitting out there in the cool of the dark night, my desire for Dolly
was immensely enhanced.
I wondered if I should go home. I knew there was always a
possibility Seth would come back...and I sure did not want a
scene for Dolly to have to deal with. Also, if that WAS Seth's
coke, he was likely to come looking for it.

The night became the wee hours before daybreak, and Dolly had
been chatting with her head on Vic's shoulder for hours.
They rose to go inside, and Vic said, "How're the beds in back?
Which one has a sheet?" He grinned at the way they bunked on her
all the time.
Dolly stepped up to Vic, until the fluff of her hair was touching
his chin. Then she raised her face...and said, "Would you...?
But she could not finish the sentence.
Vic struggled with the passionate desire surging through
him...and he thought of Dolly's night's alone there with Seth.
Seth… who might return at any time in the wee hours.
Vic put his arms lightly around Dolly. But he was terrified to
kiss her, for he knew if he ever did...he could not resist.

<<Who do you think should have Dolly? Should she try to make Seth
into the man she wants him to be, or should she be strong...and
have Vic in the right way? How would YOU finish it?>>

FINALE
Vic stared down at Dolly, with all the emotion from months of
resentment against Seth showing in his face.
"Doll...you and Seth have been lovers a long time.
Now, I'm not saying I hold that against you. All I am saying ,
sweetheart...if you don't want him no more, you should stand firm
on that word, and not be goin' off with him all th' time." Vic
looked a bit embarrassed after this long speech into affairs that
were not his.
Yet, in his mind, if this woman wanted him to be with her...he
had to know some things.

Dolly dropped her head to hide the mist in her eyes...and
answered him by sliding both arms around his back and pushing her
face into his chest. "Vic...I have tried to make things ok for me
and Seth, because I thought he wanted me and him to be soulmates.
But after all these months of nothing but presents and
propositions- I guess I am just his mistress. Or so HE thinks..." she sputtered indignantly. "I told him I don't want no relationship like that...he just laughs and says, 'like whut?' And I tell him, you know what I mean. But then he just comes in without even callin' again!!"
Vic responded to the warmth of confidence by lifting her chin to
watch her speak with one arm while the other one slipped down
onto her buttock and pulled her close to himself.
"Then, let's change it once and for all, Dolly", He said...and
they moved toward the back rooms.
Dolly did not protest, when Vic invited her to join him on the
mattress set on the floor.
He did not want to go into the room where she shared ghost
meetings with Seth. If this were to be, it would be on his terms.

They lay on the mattress, cuddling and talking for awhile, and
Vic was removing her clothes items, one by one. With each
subsequent undressing, Dolly shared a long, penetrating kiss with
Vic- again and again.

Plunging into the starlit night...they gave no thought to any
other, but the heady wine that was their cup this night.
So dark moved into day, while they peacefully slept.

Walking to the door with Vic after breakfast...Dolly made a last
request of him, "How about we forget that pack of coke I found
yesterday," she asked. "Whoever lost it did not know they lost it here, and I just wanna know LESS about it".
"Sure" agreed Vic, "I think you're right. It never existed to us". He smiled reassuringly at her.
"Well, I will see you in about a week, then-" he patted her hair
and stepped toward the car. "Yeah, guy". "I should be back before
the week is up".

In the quiet of the morning, Dolly put on her makeup, and dressed
for downtown. Then, pausing to step into the bathroom...she lifted the board and got the packet of white powder. "My ticket, baby," she
whispered, "my ticket."

Moving through the traffic until she reached the green door,
Dolly sped to a place called "Pansies". Pansy would give her the
value of this with no questions asked...and she could be on her
way.

Pansy held up the little fat packet..."Wow, if somebody paid you
with this, yore wurth a lot.." "You know me better than that,
Pansy", Dolly chided. "I found that. Seemed like a miracle, the
way I need money, and all" Pansy folded and handed her the 400
dollars. "Gee thanks, Pansy" she said huskily, "you're a real
friend".
"Oh go ahead and take another 50" she stuck another $50 bill in
her hand.
"Thanks, Pansy, I have to go now," Dolly hung her head, and moved
on out the door, misty eyed.
"YOU CALL" Pansy ordered, as she rounded the corner to go to her
car.

Dolly did not have to go back to the house. She had all her
preferred items with her.

Delivering the car to Jack, she had a twinge of homesickness
already. Seth was crawling on the back roads of her memory...and she wanted him OFF. So she gingerly stepped into the car shop to holler for
Jack.
"Here y'are", he grinned, as he shook her hand. "and right on
time," as he reached to pour a cup of coffee and nodded
questionly at her for a cuppa. "No, no thanks," Dolly told him. I
need to get on down the road, if you can leave right now."
"Nah, but I asked Jimboy here to run you, if ya don' mind??"
"Sure," Dolly smiled at the older teen, and thanked him as they
got back into her car.
But this time, he drove...for she was only going a few blocks to
a bus station.
And it was not long before the bus would pull out, she knew it.
She knew, too.. that Jack and the others did NOT know. She did
not tell them where she was really going.

Jack had given her the money for her car yesterday...and she paid
it off, by writing a check and dropping it in the mail. She did
not profit much off it, but it was enough to buy a further
ticket.

Dolly began to sing, in time with the whine of the bus tires on
the road and the steady engine. "Wheese, hum hum, wheese hum
hum..." she was about to make up words, and the soft thoughts of
the future interrupted.
Her sister would meet her in Seattle, and maybe they'd go on to
Canada, and… or maybe just to Oregon. Wait and see. See how the
jobs land.
She could work on a computer, she knew some accounting...then
there was always the cocktail waitress jobs.
She and sis could make it, she just knew it!!

So, the bus was a happy place on this day... for Dolly
Mason...and she was smiling into a new life. Little did she realize at this very early day...
last night...she had a new life planted inside her body...
But that would not become evident for a few more weeks...and even
then.. Would it matter, or would it just be a nuisance??
But that is another story...
