Saltwater Brewery developed a 100% biodegradable, compostable, and edible six-pack ring that is made from the barley and wheat remnants leftover from the brewing process.

As many as 1 million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles die every year from getting trapped in six-pack and turtles and other sea creatures often die from eating the plastic debris as it floats through the ocean. Using wheat and barley that would otherwise be discarded from the beer-making process, Saltwater Brewery’s biodegradable six-packs are completely edible for any sea creature.

The price of Saltwater Brewery’s edible six-pack rings is admittedly higher than its dangerous plastic predecessor. But Saltwater argues that if larger brewers and beer industry leaders followed suit in saving the environment, producing edible six-pack rings would quickly become a financially viable solution with competitive pricing that could beat out the plastic rings that most beer companies use now.

@Linkat,
Fantastic, wonderful!

It's about time something was done to protect the wildlife, ecology and environment.

Still, I would ask all people to continue taking out your scissors and cutting away those rings on multipack beverages. Even biodegradable will take some time to break down and it might be longer than a bird or other creature has to wait it out.

@chai2,

Rather than ensnaring curious animals in a corset of litter, the company’s six-pack rings could serve as a satisfying snack. And if nothing is biting, the rings quickly decompose.

It doesn't say how quickly - but must be quicker than the 90 days of the plastic ones now out there.

@roger,
I wonder how many of the world's problems can be solved that way. I'm gonna spend the next couple days applying the MTTLPC solution to various problems to see.
