Works in progress.

Where I live, when workers are repairing the road, the above notice is put up. Should it be "Work" instead? Thanks.

In countries using British English 'work' (uncountable singular) or more traditionally 'works' (plural) can be used. Work is being carried out; works are being carried out; road work/works ahead.

Of course your reply is as good as usual.
I didn't vote it up in order to remind you that some people have gone morbid.

Work is being carried out on Main Street next week. This comprises removal of the road surface for a distance of 100 metres, excavation of a ditch, burial of a drain pipe, restoration of the road surface and reapplication of road surface markings.

See the difference?
