I'll check out Druid history, Bill; because, at the moment, over here, most Druids are drunken people who like to dance wearing nothing but beads Confused.

dròm_et_rêve"]Thank you, Wiyaka: I'm very grateful for your patience; I love reading your explanations, and I will make sure that I'll come back with further questions: there's nothing like your culture in Warwickshire or indeed in England, which I find sad, because it's so fascinating, and it seems so wise; do you think that your ways will still be here and observed, as it were, in a hundred years' time?

[/QUOTE]

Oh yes! After the US federal government outlawed all of our ceremonies in 1888, the Spiritual Elders did them in hiding...risking prosecution and possible imprisonment in federal prison. We knew some that have since passed on, Uncle Selo Black Crow and Grandpa Wallace Black Elk. These wonderful men risked imprisonment for attending and finally conducting ceremonies for years, until the Freedom of Religion Act of 1978 was signed by President Carter. Uncle Selo breought the Sun Dance back, in 1968! Sam and I sure do miss those two, what with the Teachings, stories and even hugs. A day doesn't go by that we think of them, without Uncle Selo smiling out of my screen saver.

In fact, there are other races and nationalities trying to learn this way of life. At Sun Dance last year, there were two Italian women that came to observe and support the dancers. There was even a Japanese man that danced and was pierced.

BillW's right on. The Druids of old were very nature based in their beliefs. Perhaps, some ancient writings still exist in England. Actually, all peoples were tribal at one time and had many of the same beliefs, only practices, names of spirits and their attributes differed. Then came the formation of nations and the rest is history. Crying or Very sad

I think that we would all be better as tribes or, even better, as nomads who would pitch together. The idea of country has caused the whole 'Nation over Nation' feeling and, subsequently, so much repression and misunderstanding..

I'm really pleased to hear about your Uncle, and how you keep him in your memory. What do you think about there being afterlife or reincarnation? Anyway, we need more people who think of the wider picture, rahter than 'I want ___' and 'I want ___.' I personally have wanted to do something big ever since I was little-- but people, everyone apart from one teacher, tried to deter me by saying that I should think for myself and that anything else is being ridiculous quixotic. One of my grand-aunts and her Scottish husband (I have so many due to mass-immigration and emigration, my family were ambassadors mainly) gave up their lives so that Catalan could be spoken... I've always been proud of that...

However; why was the Sun Dance banned? Where does yours take place: a set ground?

Red Earth - it is considered by the natives to be more commercial than spiritual; but, the "fancy dance" and other dances are for real......

Drom, Bill,

The Ghost Dance is rarely danced, since the massacre of Big Foot's band at Wounded Knee in 1892. However, the Sun Dance was brought back by Uncle Selo, in 1968, when the Spirits came to him and told him it's history and how to do it. He taught many people how to dance and even run Sun Dances. There are only 56 on the Pine Ridge alone, not counting those done elsewhere.

Book's worth reading are, "Black Elk Speaks" and "The Sacred PIpe, Black Elk's Account of the Seven Sacred Rites of the Oglala Sioux". The first is a biography that was written by John G Neidhart, based on interviews with Black Elk and translated from Lakota by his son Ben Black Elk. According to a friend, Ben junior, it's accurate. So is the other. Both should be available through any reputable book dealer or Amazon.com. We have both.

Sam and I a fortunate in meeting with many Elders and learning from them first hand. I call myself a parrot, for repeating what I've been told by these wonderful men and women. Most will say, "It's sacred, not secret." I agree with Black Elk in that there will eventually be a "Rainbow Tribe" as described in his visions and work hard for it. (There! That should keep you busy researching and reading for a while. Very Happy )

Regarding reincarnation, yes, we believe in it. However, differently than Buddhists. We believe that a person is brought into this world to say, do or learn something in this life. Once we die, we cross the Star Nation (Milky Way) to the south (hence the term "gone South"), where we meet an old woman at a gate. She's called the White Swan. She will ask us if we've learned, said, and done what we're supposed to in life. If we have, we are permitted into Paradise. If not, we are sent back to relive similar situations in another body, maybe even of the opposite sex, to learn what we've missed.

Please understand, the only one with ALL of the answers is the Creator. That's why Spirits are sent to this physical world to get answers. Not everyone recognizes that we are sent here for a purpose or what that purpose is. It only took me a bit over thirty years, from the time of my first vision, to understand what my purpose is. That was shown by several dreams and visions within the past three years. The Elders have all agreed with my interpretations of these visions and dreams. So, Sam and I have the Work, as we call it, keeping us busy.

Bill,

Red Earth is a rez in NW Minnesota. We know the Hereditary Chief there. Is that the Red Earth you're talking about?

devriej,
If you check an atlas of North America for Turtle Island, I think there may hundreds of Turtle Islands listed.

There is also red earth in southern Utah, if you count the red sandstone formations.

Ah. I see. I have heard there's more than one, but I didn't know there were many! I forgot about Utah, but I've seen Sedona, probably why I think of it when red earth gets mentioned.
