Hey, Wiyaka:

Red coats are just one example of a very, very English thing; of making things look good on the outside, handing them out, and then thinking 'to Hell with "whatever happens next!"'

How many used to crowd in with you? Your wonderful memories remind me of a debate that I was watching a while ago-- whether it would be better to revert to showing TV only once a week; I wonder....

'Mad Girl's Love Song'

"I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead;
I lift my lids and all is born again.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

The stars go waltzing out in blue and red,
And arbitrary blackness gallops in:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed
And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

God topples from the sky, hell's fires fade:
Exit seraphim and Satan's men:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

I fancied you'd return the way you said,
But I grow old and I forget your name.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

I should have loved a thunderbird instead;
At least when spring comes they roar back again.
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)"

Drom,

There were about ten neighbors, not counting their kids that would come for pot luck dinner and TV. It was great fun.

That song has so many places to take off from Confused , I choose the last....Thunderbird. In Lakota, we call them Wakians, protector of the Winkte (me) and Wioptula (Sam)or Two Spirit (GLBT), as well as the Heyoka (Often called Contrary or Sacred Clown).

Therefore, using Thunderbird as my take of word, I'll say "Little GTO" as my submission.

Wow... how is it decided who protects whom? How many protectors are there, roughly?

Guanajuato (Often abbreviated to GTO.)

Drom,

The Spirts choose who they will guide and protect. The person is shown these Guides in visions and dreams. The number of protectors is immense and depends on the culture. Sam and I have several and not all the same. We both are protected mainly by the Wakians for the reasons given. We both have others that are the same, to different degrees of influence.

Our traditions have attributed certain gifts to certain Spirits. They been consistant for centuries, so we understand that they must be accurate. We ask them all to help us become better people and to use our Gifts for the Health and Help of all people. Understand, we only have the ability to ask them to help. We don't have any power over the Spirits, but they will answer us...even if the answer is "No.".

BTW, anyone claiming to be a Lakota medicine man or woman is a fake. No person claims that title. It is given by the people. The closest a true medicineman or woman might come is, "You might call me a medicineman." or "Some have called me a medicineman." They are even embarrassed by being introduce to someone that way. There are some like Grandpa Wallace Black Elk, who calmly and graciously have accepted this type of introduction, but never laid claim to that title.

We know of one young man that claimed this title to Sam and I during a Sun dance and was laughed at by everyone there, especially the Elders! Laughing We later found that he was very full of his self perceived importance and "knowledge". You should have heard the roar of laughter from everyone when he claimed, "Billie, you're not Winkte. I know a Winkte and you're nothing like that." Laughing

Sam and I are very open and honest about our way of life. Fell free to ask. Thank you for allowing me a chance to teach a little of our ways.

Thank you, Wiyaka: I'm very grateful for your patience; I love reading your explanations, and I will make sure that I'll come back with further questions: there's nothing like your culture in Warwickshire or indeed in England, which I find sad, because it's so fascinating, and it seems so wise; do you think that your ways will still be here and observed, as it were, in a hundred years' time?

You would come closer if you studied the Druids drom, even though I don't know that much about them, I do know they are closer to nature.....
