Can anyone tell me how to wipe all the data from my computer and reload windows95. Have tried wiping by following these instructions:
Place the win98 startup disk in the A DRIVETURN ON (or RESTART) the computer - it will take a couple minutes…you don't need to do anything..it will startThe computer will eventually stop and the last thing on the screen will be a:>Type FDISK and hit ENTERAnswer YES to large disk supportChoose DELETE EXTENDED PARTITION (IF ONLY ONE DRIVE SKIP to DELETING PRIMARY PARTITION)Follow the unscreen stepsCome back to the FDISK MENU (hit escape if needed)Choose DELETE PRIMARY DOS PARTITIONFollow the onscreen stepsUse ESCAPE key to exit fdiskCONTROL / ALT / DELETE to restartWhen you get back to the a:> type FDISK againAgain say YES to large disk supportChoose create PRIMARY DOS PARTITIONWhen it asks if you want to make it full size ( something like that), say YESIt will tell you to restart, ESCAPE out of fdisk and CONTROL ALT DELETEFormat the computerWhen the computer returns to the a:> type FORMAT C: and hit ENTERIt will warn you that all data is about to be lost, answer YESIt will run for 10-15 minutesIt will ask for a VOLUME LABEL (enter for none) hit ENTERInstall WIN98
I'm not sure where to go from here as the instructions given about installing WIN98 didn't work.
Please help!
Many thanks!
If you want to continue to install windows 98, then after Format and the Volume Label, restart the PC and choose Install Windows with CD ROM Support. And insert your Windows 98 CD in the CD-ROM drive.
Then you need to get into the CD-ROM drive:
For example if your CD-ROM drive is "E", then type the following:
A:\E:
E:\dir
E:\cd Win98
E:\dir
E:\cd cabs
E:\setup
Wait then press Enter when you are asked.
Installation will begin.
If you want to Install Windows 95, you must know that Windows 95 first edition only support FAT 16, so you'll do exactly the same steps as windows 98 but when you type FDISK at the beginning you must choose NO to large disk support.
You should also remember that FAT 16 do not support partitions greater than 2 GB. So if your hard disk contains a partition greater than 2 GB then you can't install Windows 95 first edition on this partition.
PS: If you want a very clean format on C drive then use this command when format:
A:\format c: \s\u
Those instructions simply clear everything on your hard drive, leading up to a clean Windows install. It does not include any instructions whatsoever regarding the Windows 98 installation itself, other than mentioning that you should "Install Win98".
You'll need to make sure the boot disk you're starting with is a Windows 98 or ME boot disk (they include generic CD-ROM drivers), specify that you want to start the PC with CD support, then when you get to the command prompt type E:\Win95\Setup.exe (replace E with whatever drive letter your CD drive is, but since you created only one HD partition & the boot disk will also create a virtual RAMDrive, in your case it probly will be E). (That path would typically be E:\Setup.exe on a Win98 CD.)
Edited to add: Do not use a Windows 95 boot floppy, regardless of which version of Windows you're installing. It does not include generic CD-ROM support so you will be left manually editing system files in order to install a DOS CD driver. It's just not worth the trouble -- use a Win98/ME boot disk.
Ah, Cyanure already posted info.
One minor thing about Cy's final line there:
format c: \s\u will not work. It should be format c: /s/u
Btw, for reference, the /s switch copies system files to the drive once the format is complete, & the undocumented /u switch performs an Unconditional format, which destroys every byte of data by overwriting it with zeroes.
Cleaning Computer and re-installing windows 95
Thank you for your reply. I am still stuck, trying to install windows 95. When I restart my PC I am not given the option to Install Windows with CD Rom Support. It can only be restarted by doing CTRL+ALT+Delete. When it's restarted C:\> appears. Nothing happens when I try to install the windows 95 cd by inserting it into the cd rom. I tried the following:
A:\E:
E:\dir
E:\cd Win98
E:\dir
E:\cd cabs
E:\setup
E:\dir tells me:
Volume in drive E has no labelDirectory of E:\
CONTEM"1 DOC
MMSSETUP EXE
BLOCKL"1 DOC
I'm losts! Please help.
Then try the other letter.
As Monger said a virtual drive will be created and may be labeled "E".
Look for the other letter. If you made one partition it will be labeled "C" and the CD-ROM will be labeled "D"

I always get confused with \ or /

If you are not given the option to start your computer with CD-ROM support, that is because you did not follow instructions carefully enough (you're probly using a Win95 boot disk).
You can download a standard Windows 98 boot disk at many different Websites...if you need help tracking one down let me know.
