Well the wife thought that he hadn't noticed her following him. When he went into the barn, she hid and sat down. The man however knew that she was there (he just knew it).

Apparently, she believed he would not pull it through, and would step of the chair. He didn't. That why she thought it to be an accident.
Now, I read this in a book about a family full of women whos men did not only die of accidents, but who were also SUPPOSED to die of accidents (and the ones who did not, should).
