Not if you want the texture or taste of a nut. Ground nuts act like flour.

I never take a recipe as set in stone. Normally I look up about four or five recipes and make an amalgam of those.

If you don't like the sound of anything replace it with something you do like the sound of. It's your cake.

I make christmas "nut rolls" that use a mixture of coarse ground pecans and shaved pecans . The goal is to make anutty "paste" with which make a rollup filling for thw rolls.

The recipe calls for shaved and my mom, on a blast of insight about fillings, started making the mixture with the dual textures.

I envy you, I spent most of those Christmases in Yorkshire with my teetotal grandmother who had a remarkable knack of sucking the joy out of everything.
