I still say this is a medium bomber with major air2air and defensive weaponry along with its bombing capabiolities, and not any sort of a fighter or "strikefighter".

@gungasnake,
Agreed, looks more like a mini B1 or F111. Wonder what courses the cockpit kitchen can deliver !

Interesting take in the OP title.

@Leadfoot,
That's just what the thing is. You should assume that God is on Russia's side these days.

SU-34 a pile of junk that is no match for Turkish firepower.

Quote:
Turkish warplanes are reported to have shot down an unidentified military aircraft near the border with Syria.

A Turkish military official told the Reuters news agency that Turkish F-16s had fired on the jet after warning it that it was violating Turkish airspace.

Turkish media broadcast video footage of a plane crashing into mountains near the border with Hatay province.

Syrian and Russian military aircraft have been targeting jihadist militants and Western-backed rebels in the area.

Hehehehe . . .

An American fighter which went into service more than 35 years ago smoked Sukhoi's hotshot new fighter bomber, which went into service about a year and a half ago . . .

Hehehehehe . . .

@izzythepush,
The main factors were probably:

An agile fighter against a relatively clumsy fighter/bomber - and
Far superior air to air weaponry on the F-16 (probably none on the SU-34 since they didn't expect to be in a dogfight.)

But still very embarassing for the Russians...

@Leadfoot,
It was an SU 24 which is an equally old plane. The 34 is heavily armored, slower, but has pilot "comfort" over survivability. Had and F16 come up on a SU 34 it would have been pretty much the same same.

Ill bet we will deploy newer ASSM cruise missiles and heavier packing drones . Fast just doesnt do it anymore especially when missiles can woop along at hypersonic speeds. ASSM's use a combination of 4 onboard "steering" and target acquisition systems, not just GPS
Why endanger pilots when we dont have to. Russia is still about 25 years behind despite their "catch up" of the last decade.

@farmerman,
Yep, as much as I will miss the romance, the age of the fighter pilot is about over.
