Cogito ergo sum - Rene Descartes
This is one of the most powerful statements ever made. It virtually silenced the Skeptics. They were never able to negate it.
It is however one of those kind of things that it is easy to misinterpret or more specifically, only see the superficial meaning while missing the deeper implications.

Welcome Grieg. I for one would love to hear about the deeper meaning of this famous quote.

On the same note:

Thanks panzade. I can only give a short explanation here because a more thorough and detailed analysis belongs in the philosophy forum.

In a nutshell: (taken from an outline by Karen Warren)

As to the foundations of human knowledge:

Quote:
The Cogito as the Fundamental Principle of Human Knowledge
1. Reasoning: Descartes concludes that although I can be deceived about the existence of everything I think about (including the physical world and my own body), I cannot be deceived or mistaken in thinking that I exist (as a thinker who is deceived), since my thinking is the necessary condition of my being deceived.
a) In the very act of denying my existence I must affirm or presuppose it.
b) Doubt becomes self-canceling; human thought in grounded in an indubitable (necessary, certain) truth.

Think about this in light of the Skeptics belief that we cannot know anything with certainty i.e. we can be deceived.

Eric Hoffer:
The remarkable thing is that we really love our neighbor as ourselves: we do unto others as we do unto ourselves. We hate others when we hate ourselves. We are tolerant toward others when we tolerate ourselves. We forgive others when we forgive ourselves. We are prone to sacrifice others when we are ready to sacrifice ourselves.

For everything there is a season,
And a time for every matter under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
A time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to seek, and a time to lose;
A time to keep, and a time to throw away;
A time to tear, and a time to sew;
A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate,
A time for war, and a time for peace.
