Time out after dead ball personal foul ??

The defensive team calls time out. The ref stops the clock. Seconds after, a defensive player strikes an offensive player. The ref throws the flag after the TO has been called and assesses a dead ball, personal foul on the defense. Does the defensive team retain the TO after the 15 yards and automatic first down penalty is assessed ?? Or do they lose the yards and the TO ?
