If I own a website, it is best that I have legal info right so I will not be sued by people..
What should be in the legal info?
Does anyone have sample "Legal Info" thing that they can show me or one that Ican use for my site....
Oh and btw, can I copyright my fansite eventhough most of the stuff in it belongs to the thing that my site is based on. for example, if i own a harry potter site named The Wizardry. Can I put (C) The Wizardry 2004?... well, most of the stuff belongs to the Harry Potter people...
On another issue, theres this COPPA agreement thing, that when you are below 13, you will need your parent's permission to sign in into stuff. The thing is, I dont have a fax and stuff that parents can send me that its ok for their child to access my site.. and even if I did, i dont want the hassle of being faxed etc.
can the member who is trying to register just ask his/her mom and tell me it? If they cant, can their parents just e-mail me?
If I allow registrations of 13 year old all together, is that age-discrimnatory?
and last, if a person lies about his or her age, its not my fault that they violate that coppa thing right?
thank you.
Moved to the Legal forum...
I'll leave legalities particular to fansites to the lawyers who choose to respond.
1) You can copyright any of the website that is your creation and that does not infringe on that of others.
For example all original code and graphics would be yours.
Of course, claiming that it's copyrighted without mention that some of the content is copyrighted by others might piss of the lawyer types.
I'd make sure that a notice like "Harry Potter and all relevant trademarks are blah blah blah of their blah blah blah".
A lawyer should be able to do significantly better than my "blah blah blahs".
2) With COPPA just put a notice on registration that under 13 is not allowed and if you have any age form input deny any data under 13 (e.g. if you have a database field for age do not allow registrations to enter an age below 13).
It's perfectly legal to disallow registrations of people under 13.
Able2Know does not allow any in theory because of the hassle of that law. In practice we have no way to know and enforce it but this is understood by all and not anything we can do anything about.
Thank you for the info!
Yes, I think will just put that "Harry Potter and all relevant trademarks are blah blah blah of their blah blah blah" cuz most of the images, proper names, etc are from the Harry Potter series.
As for the COPPA thing, yes, I'll just disallow 13 year olds to join my forums then... as you said, its such a hassle with that COPPA. But I think I read somewhere that recently, the judge ruled COPPA a violation of the freedom and speech.
If I dont put "13 year olds are not allowed in here", but a message will show that says : "Minimum age required is 13, would that be ok as well?
