Mozilla Firefox

Firefox is an open-source browser from the Mozilla foundation. It has several advantages over Internet Explorer (security, privacy, features, easy to use user interface, etc). It is still in beta state, but functioning very well already.

Firefox can be downloaded here (Windows; Mac; Linux):

Reasons for switching to firefox:

I have been using firefox for some time now. It is still in development, and starting the browser on slow computers takes a long time (compared to IE). But it offers superb features (the tab-browsing is really nice Smile ) and also does well on security issues.

Howdy:

Unfortunately, Mozilla isn't immune any longer either !!

Mozilla Flaw Lets Links Run Arbitrary Programs
By Larry Seltzer
July 8, 2004

Updated: The Mozilla Foundation has confirmed findings that its Mozilla and Firefox browsers are vulnerable to attacks using the "shell:" scheme, which execute arbitrary code under Windows without the user having to click a link.

Security researchers are reporting another security issue in Web browsing under Windows, but this time Internet Explorer is not the culprit. The Mozilla Foundation's Mozilla and Firefox are reported as vulnerable. "

Mind you, they are alot quicker at getting patches available !!

Without employing common sense and undertaking due diligence in the matter of online behavior and operating system/browser updating and security, it doesn't make much difference what browser or operating system you employ. Far and away the largest proportion of exploits out there succeed simply and only because the victims failed to take the necessary, and freely available, precautions required to protect themselves. Privacy and security are the end user's responsibility; the tools necessary to maintain them are available, but do no good if they are ignored.

Good points timber...

Also, as these other browsers/OS's become more and more common-place, someone out there will look for ways to exploit them as well !!
