I thought I would try my hand at writing a riddle. I know this one is, by its very nature  , extremely basic, but I shall try to write tougher specimens in future.
My first is in forests but sometimes indoors,
My second's in coffee and stocked in some stores.
My third is in third place, its third comes in third,
My fourth, in all fairness, should clearly be heard.
My whole is the whole, or so some used to claim,
And if this proves simple, the answer's the same.
You are absolutely right; it is not 'Raven'.
'Basic' and 'simple' are intended as hints.
'In' is out and it is not 'knot'.
The trick is that when riddles have "my first..." etc it customarily means the first letter. In this case it means the first word. The answer is a set of words.
(OK, I suppose I should have called the topic "What are we?" instead of "What am I?"
but the words do form a set.)
I would say Beans because of Coffee beans but I dont think beans are heard..unless.....er...
So you saw "Blazing Saddles" too? Come to think of it, that's a clue for the first word.
