Just thought I'd ask - We'll be in AMS Oct 12 - 16, and Berlin Oct 17-23... any advice, other than the obvious (museums, galleries, etc), like great restaurants, bars, hidden gems, would be welcome, and if anyone wants to meet up, we can do it!
@Mame,
WOW, that sounds great, I wish I could go.
@Mame,
Mame, why don't you drop Walter a line, he may not have seen this and he lives in Germany, but I seem to have forgotten exactly where. Plus it might be a short trip for some of our British friends.
@Mame,
Amsterdam: I've been there, but just the usual stuff.
Berlin: been there frequently. Meeting could be done. And I'll tell you some of the not so much known hidden germs
@Walter Hinteler,
I'm sure Mame will be delighted to pick up some new and unfamiliar germs.
I hope you meant 'gems'.
@roger,

There's room for hope ...
@Walter Hinteler,
Amsterdam: you could consider to take a train ride (35 minutes) to
Leiden:
you get there all the same as in Amsterdam, including museums and canals, just a bit smaller, less crowded and less expensive. (Could be a nice day tour - for me as well
)
The Flea market in Waterlooplein is always worth a visit, the Holtkamp bakery is brilliant too. If you have kids the NEMO science centre is really fun.
If you're interested in cannabis this place sells some unbelievable varieties of Dutch hashish.
@Walter Hinteler,
I would LOVE to get your advice, Walter. Like, the vibrant, lively neighbourhoods to stay in, where to eat, etc. Any and all advice and suggestions much appreciated
@izzythepush,
Thanks, Izzy... we don't do drugs or baked goods
But we can't pass up a good flea market!
Walter, we may (most likely) will have a car and our last three days in Berlin will be driving out farther than Kreuzberg, etc., so we can hook up in any number of places. We won't have a phone, just my iPad.
@Mame,
I (we) stayed the last couple of years not in Berlin but in Potsdam (Seniors prefer it calmer than vibrant young ladies like you are).
But before I forget it: a museum (open only on Wednesdays and Sundays), which really is worth going to, but more for insiders:
"Founder Epoch Museum"
Something else, not many Canadian/American tourists will visit:
Hackesche Höfe (I'm absolutely sure, you will like that!)
@Walter Hinteler,
And if you have a car, I suggest going to the
Spreewald for a day-tour.
@Walter Hinteler,
Although in Kreuzberg, a "must": 'Street Food Thursday" in the Markthalle 9 (a
Canadian blogger's review - and some interesting links on that website, too!)
Definitely worth to be looked at is the "guide book" by
'Berlin Dude' - for the parts surrounding Berlin see
Brandenburg (state)
@Mame,
Mame, I'm so excited for you guys - your trip is sounding wonderful already.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to afflict you with one of my favorite youtube videos:
Weekend in Amsterdam - Christie Moore

Gives me chills of happiness (and I don't even smoke).
@Mame,
There's a maritime museum in a town called Enkhuizen about an hour or so north of Amsterdam - Zuyderseemuseum if I recall correctly. Fond memories of playing drunken chess in a local tavern while the snow fell.
@lmur,
The
Zuiderzeemuseum isn't just a maritime museum but a museum about the Zuiderzee (aka Ijsselmeer ) as well. (And Enkhuisen is very nice, too.) (Wikipedia:
Zuiderzee Museum)
@ossobuco,
Oops - that was missing a parenthesis -

@ossobuco,
They're not encoded as parens. It's a bracket [ ] and [/]

Hey, great links, everyone - thank you!
@Ragman,
Dammit! and I knew better too.
