Apache server

I got the following error when i try to start apache on my local machine
$ ./apachectl start
httpd: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down

I didnt log in as root.

i used --prefix= < my local directory>

Any one who can help me out. I

Your use or root makes me think Linux. What OS, distro? Are you behind a router, or on campus?

I'm using Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3. I'm connected to our company server and want to run local server on my machine.

I guess you understand my requirement....

You have to be root to run Apache on any port below 1024 (80 is the default). I would guess that's the problem. You also have an error saying apache can't find you server's name; to fix that, set the ServerName directive in your apache2.conf
