The original title of this thread was "Editing a thread title".
It didn't involve any back button - what I did was create the thread and then (within the time allowed) edit the initial post that I had made; included in the things I could edit was the title.

What I have noticed on editing is that the allowed varies enormously. I think the nominal time is five minutes, but sometimes you can go back much later.

I think it depends if the thread has been replied to already, at least in many cases.

That does tend to limit the editing, but at least twice, I've replied to posts which changed after I answered them.
