Can someone give a brief breakdown of the optimizations for both are different or how to optimize a site for both? in the past two days I had 150 hits from google but 22 from yahoo. should I do something for yahoo or what?
Ideally your optimization should be able to target both. You only need to target specific engines in very competitive situations in which you have perfect SEO and limited queries you are targeting.
It is normal to get around 70% google and around 8% Yahoo, so your stats are about standard.
The difference is largely due to their search traffic differences.
should I do anything to increase for yahoo or just leave my focus as is?
I have to ask: how did you do the links for the words that's advertising? I believe it's automatic, correct??

Unless you can identify a certain quirk particular to Yahoo that is helping a competitor rank above you you should not need Yahoo-specific SEO.

Yes, it's done with javascript and it is a program called IntelliTXT from Vibrant Media.
did you have to modify it to fit with phpbb?
What do you mean?
I had to modify the phpbb software to do so. But the program required no modifications.
I mean, was it a simple integration or did it require some work to make it "fit"?
Pretty simple.
But it only has specific channels (e.g. computing) available and I'm not sure that your site would qualify for the ones they have.
When they expand maybe they'll become more inclusive.
oh, so you don't program your own adds then? they do it for you, a service?
Basically, I put the tags on and target the channels per forum, and the script does the rest. Heck you can see how if you view the source and follow the code.
The targeted text is wrapped in divs, the script fetches a list of kewords and rewrites the enclosed (in the divs) text with the ads.
