What Shall you do with the Memories...................

Keep them ever in caskets of mind,
Stow them quietly among the anomalies
Of distance, and records of time.

There is nothing that can creep inside it,
There is naught that can rust in the place
Where one hears the sound of remember,
While feeling the steps of disgrace.

Inspired by my dear friend Gautam.

We all take our memories to the grave to be forever lost. We have a short life on this planet; try to live to the fullest that satisfies your strongest desires. Some people never leave their village or community. Some people travel the four corners of the earth. I like the latter.

Good morning, C.I. Yes, and some people write. <smile> Incidentally, the "casket" in this poem was in reference to a small box where letters and other things are kept. Ever hear the old song "Little rose wood Casket"? My mom loved it, and sang it frequently.

I think I'll take mine and light the corner of my mind.

Mornin', Gus. For you:

Light the corner of your mind,
With some trite fondness
Of a former time.
Calico thoughts
And patchwork quilts,
A flower that too often wilts
Amidst the lime
Of quickness.

How long is your life?
A year, fifty, a hundred years?
Just as long as the memories last,
The resonance when his name is said,
The pang in the heart of those who loved him,
Just as long as the eyes of a grandchild
Inspire the thought 'She looks just like him'.

I'm glad you liked it, Gautam. A double sniff for me, too.

Clary, That was so tender, and obviously from the heart as well as the soul. Today promises to be one that will carry us on.

Good morning.

I understand that perfectly, Gautam. I have something that I wrote so long ago. I have thought about posting it here, but I find I can't share it with the world, either. Anytime that you feel ready, just send it to me, my friend.

Gautam, I know exactly how that works; try not to think of something that hurts, and it occupies your mind 99.9 percent of the time. ouch! Best wishes, my friend, and keep in good health.

I couldn't remember all the words to the song, "Little Rosewood Casket", sooooo I did a search and came up with these.

There's a little rosewood casket
Resting on a marble stand
With a packet of old love letters
Written by my true love's hand

Go and bring them to me, sister
Read them o'er for me tonight
I have often tried but could not
For the tears that filled my eyes

When I'm dead and in my casket
When I gently fall asleep
Fall asleep to wake in heaven
Dearest sister do not weep

Take his letters and his locket
Place them gently on my heart
But this golden ring that he gave me
From my finger never part

When I'm dead and in my casket
When I gently fall asleep
Fall asleep to wake in heaven
Dearest sister do not weep

Album Lyrics: Trio - Dolly Parton/Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt [1987]

Parton Dolly
"Trio - Dolly Parton/Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt"

Hey, them gals may have sung the song, along with Hank Thompson, but the lyrics go much further back than they do, cause my mama didn't know them folks! Smile

Love this Letty, although I had a different casket in mind when I first read it. It invokes a very potent image.

Why, thanks, Jo. Hmmmm. Perhaps I should have used a different choice of words. That just seemed to fit at the time.

Letty, I keep returning to this one...I wouldn't change a word. I like the imagery - either way.

however; on the same subject:

channels of memory,
events passed but stored,
in bioshelves, pulsing;
bombarded daily with more;
new woes, new sores, new scars.

they drift in time over,
the brink of truth,
floating deep in wishes and regrets.
a corner here bent, there twisted;
till the crystal regrown,
bright and shiny
reflects the way it should have been,
so long, long ago!

Fantastic, Bo! You never cease to amaze me. "....in bioshelves, pulsing..."

That particular line was especially vivid.

Stow them away
Till a bright sunny day
Awakening all that has past
Let the feelings flow
From so long ago
Bring them forth to remind you at last
