Again, it wasn't a list of performers but songs. I can't repeat word for word why songs from Broadway shows were included and it is a subjective decision. This was a list of songs from movies, not a list of songs written for movies -- you can get that list by following the Oscar list. I'm sure it's available on the Interent but I haven't searched. This was a panel of judges within the industry chosen by AFI and they qualified it as such. Like all lists, any of us can come up with our own list. What song would you bump for "Let's Do the Time Walk Again?"

I'd gladly bump "The Trolley Song", "Do-Re-Mi", "People", "My Heart Will Go On", "Arthur's Theme" among others. But then, my taste is notoriously poor.

Here's what the AFI site says: "Song: Music and lyrics featured in an American film that set a tone or mood, define character, advance plot and/or express the film's themes in a manner that elevates the moving image art form. Songs may have been written and/or recorded specifically for the film or previously written and/or recorded and selected by the filmmaker to achieve the above goals."

"Old Time Rock and Roll" from "Risky Business": really, it's not a musical, it's not Tom Cruise singing, it has no connection to the movie. Dump it.

"Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" from "Wizard of Oz": there's already a song from that movie in the list ("Somewhere Over the Rainbow"). Is "Ding Dong" such a great song on its own that it deserves inclusion?

"It Had to Be You" from "When Harry Met Sally" and "Seems Like Old Times" from "Annie Hall": these were great songs when they were first written. Sticking old songs in new movies is sorta' cheating, isn't it?

There, that's a few spaces opened up for "Time Warp," as well as "The Continental," "Babes in Arms," and something from "Kiss Me Kate" or a Nelson Eddy-Jeanette McDonald musical (how about "Indian Love Call?").

Also, the fact that "Lydia the Tattooed Lady" is not on the list is an unforgivable crime.

Thanks for your time in searching for the AFI statement -- I can buy it.

The list wasn't confined to songs from musicals either. I can agree on "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" (actually "We're Off to See the Wizard" is a better song). You're other selections are certainluy valid. Again, a list of songs written just for a film is the Oscar list. I don't believe they wanted to reiterate that list.

BTW, it would also be interesting to compare this list with the list of Oscar winners.

Off the top of my head LW, I'd bump the Flashdance theme for Purple Rain. Any day.

Yes, that would be a sub I could accept. Can't find the list of songs that won the Oscar on the Internet even at the Oscar site! I could get it from my library like the Osborne book but it would take too much time to compile and type in.

I found it in a roundabout way. You highlight the category and then the years you want. That's how I checked that Purple Rain had indeed won the Oscar for Best Score on 1984. I'm guessing but if you indicate all years, perhaps the entire list will come up.

That's Best Score, but I was looking for Best Songs. No luck in the several different searches. Lot of luck on Best Scores.

The one most glaring ommission to me is "Secret Love" from "Calamity Jane" as sung by Doris Day.

I missed that "Secret Love" is in the 400 nominated and it did win the Oscar for that year.

Thanks Joe and LW for the lists. Wow!

You're right Joe, 19, and maybe even more. And since they were choosing songs from Broadway shows, I wonder why they by-passed , Oklahoma, Annie Get Your Gun, Carousel, Brigadoon, (they all had smash hit songs) and even Oliver. I recommend that next time they separate Broadway musicals from movie songs. (lol)

Secret Love was a smash hit, L. W. I agree it should have been there.

And certainly, unless I've overlooked it, a song from the first talkie, Al Jolson's Jazz Singer.

"Secret Love" is a classic ballad and Doris Day turned it into an anthem.

I think you'll find the songs you may have wondered about their exclusion in the 100 on the 400 list. Just immediately, "Carousel" is represented by "June Is Busting Out All Over."

I have "Brigadoon" on DVD and "Heather on the Hill" is one of my favorites -- this is a panel vote so anything can happen. It happens with the Oscars every year.

Right!. I found Carousel and Oliver on the nominated list. Haven't spotted Oklahoma yet. If we thought long enough about it, we'd probably be able to list another 100 songs that we feel should be on that list.

I also see "I Enjoy Being a Girl" from "Flower Drum Song." I would like to see "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" on the list!
