Which lyrics are stuck in your brain today?

The powers that be
that force us to live like we do
bring me to my knees
when I see what they've done to you
but I'll die as I stand here today
knowing that deep in my heart
they'll fall to ruin one day
for making us part

from Back on the Chain Gang

I just love the way The Pretenders triple dubbed the last scale of the last line of that stanza in which Chrissie Hynde sings the word "part." She harmonizes with herself.

It sounds as if she's crying. Sometimes it makes me cry also.

I hadn't played Out Of Time for years & it was nice to hear it again, today. Like an old friend. Smile For the rest of the day I've been singing bits & pieces of it:

..That's me in the corner
That's me in the spot
light ...

LOSING MY RELIGION

Life is bigger
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up

That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

Every whisper
Of every waking hour I'm
Choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt lost and blinded fool
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up

Consider this
The hint of the century
Consider this
The slip that brought me
To my knees failed
What if all these fantasies
Come flailing around
Now I've said too much
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
That was just a dream

Another powerful Stipe song...I never git a handle on the thought behind it, but what a melody.

Last night we had an older singer come up and do a tune popular back in the 50's. It has the kind of languorous tempo that gets stuck in your mind like peanut brittle.

Funny How Time Slips Away
words and music: by Willy Nelson

Well hello there,
my it's been a long long time
How am I doin',
oh well I guess I'm doin' fine
It's been so long now and it seems that
It was only yesterday
Mmm, ain't it funny how time slips away

How's your new love,
I hope that he's doin' fine
Heard you told him, yes baby
That you'd love him till the end of time
Well you know, that's the same thing
that you told me
Well it seems like just the other day
Mmm, ain't it funny how time slips away

Gotta go now,
guess I'll see you hanging round
Don't know when though, oh
Never know when I'll be back in town
But I remember what I told you
That in time your gonna pay

Well ain't it surprisin' how time slips away
Yeah, ain't it surprisin' how time slips away

Yes! It was strange playing the cd again, panzade. Having played it to death umpteen years ago I'd thoroughly reached saturation point. But today it sounded so fresh & alive!
Funny, it never did matter, exactly what the song MEANT, did it. It just hit the spot! Very Happy

No, you're so right...one of those tunes where the voice and melody completely made the lyrics superfluous.

... & this (more recent) one, too. Stuck, well & truly stuck in my head today ... I love it! Not just the words & music, but also because it reminds me of the wonderful clip of REM & the students at the school where the clip was filmed. Just delightful. Very Happy Very Happy

All The Way To Reno (you're gonna be a star)

humming
all the way to Reno
you've dusted the non-believers
and challenged the laws of chance
now, sweet
you were so sugar sweet
you may as well have had 'kick me'
fastened on your sleeve

you know what you are,
you're gonna be a star
you know what you are
you're gonna be a star

wing
is written on your feet
your Achilles heel
is a tendency
to dream
but you've know that from the beginning
you didn't have to go so far
you didn't have to go.

you know what you are,
you're gonna be a star
you know what you are
you're gonna be a star

you know who you are
you know who you are
you know who you are.

humming
all the way to Reno,
you've written your own directions
and whistled the rules of change

you know what you are
you're gonna be a star
you know what you are
you're gonna be a star
you know what you are
you're gonna be a star
you know what you are
you're gonna be a star

humming
all the way to Reno
all the way to Reno
all the way to Reno

you're gonna be a star, you are
you're gonna be a star
you're gonna be a star, you are
you're gonna be a star

It's a track from REVEAL, 2001. Their 20th anniversary album, apparently. Surprised Rather laid back (compared say, to MONSTER) but I like it.
I think Michael Stipe could sing silly advertising jingles & still sound wondeful! Laughing

"I don't wanna know".

(No idea why.)

Can't find it on Google! It was a bunch of "I don't wanna know"s and the only full sentence I can remember is "I don't wanna know how much you care/ I don't wanna/ I don't wanna/ I don't wanna know-oh-oh-ohOH/ I don't wanna..."

(What can I say, I don't choose my mental soundtrack.)

Ring any bells? Now it's starting to make me crazy. 80's song. Bratty young male singer? Just no idea.

Long shot of that jumping sign,
Visible shivers running down my spine.
Cut the baby taking off her clothes.
Close-up of the sign that says,"We never close"
You snatch a tune, you a match a cigarette,
She pulls the eyes out with a face like a magnet.
I don't know how much more of this I can take.
She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake.

You think you're alone until you realize you're in it.
Now fear is here to stay. Love is here for a visit.
They call it instant justice when it's past the legal limit.
Someone's scratching at the window. I wonder who is it?
The detectives come to check if you belong to the parents
who are ready to hear the worst about their daughter's disappearance.
Though it nearly took a miracle to get you to stay,
it only took my little fingers to blow you away.

I understand
you've been running from the man
that goes by the name of the sandman
he flies the sky like and eagle in the eye
of a hurricane that's abandoned

I Do Love Her So (Lime Tree Arbour)

The boatman calls from the lake
A lone loon dives upon the water
I put my hand over her
Down in the lime tree arbour

The wind in the trees is whispering
Whispering low that I love her
She puts her hand over mine
Down in the lime tree arbour

Through every breath that I breathe
And every place I go
There is hand that protects me
And I do love her so

There will always be suffering
It flows through life like water
I put my hand over hers
Down in the lime tree arbour

The boatman he has gone
And the loons have flown for cover
She puts her hand over mine
Down in the lime tree arbour

Through every word that I speak
And every thing I know
There is hand that protects me
And I do love her so

I've got I Wanna Hold Your Hand AND Money Can't Buy Me Love. My niece is has finally determined that she wants to be at least a little like me so I have had to play - actually bought the new 1 CD - certain songs off the album for us to sing to.
