In general, how long should an external modem last?

The last one I bought for my HP lasted slightly more than 1 year. Is this normal?

I think it all depends. Mine lasted 2 years before I had to replace it. I've known people that have gone many years without replacing theirs.

The should last virtually forever. I've never had one break, they were always replaced because they were outdated long before they ever broke down.

This was a cheap one ($57). The expensive one I used to have lasted until the bronze clips broke off.

The old modem I've been using on my HP made a humming noise, before it went sour.

I'm assuming its the modem, since when I try to log onto the internet
I get a message, unable to initialize modem. Idea

Now the old modem is working. I took the modem out of the computer, blew the inside of the computer out ( in case there was dust) and then pushed the modem back in!

Just saved $80! Razz
