@fresco,
Sorry, but that is all the information the question has. I guess it can be worked out using algebra but am really struggling!

You're correct.

The missing info is that they are assuming the side lengths are an exact number of inches.

Answer coming in about 10 minutes...

@sophocles,
C measures 31" x 31". (961 sq. in.)
B measures 41" x 41". (1681 sq. in.)
A measures 49" x 49". (2401 sq. in.)

Each step up in size represents a difference of 720 sq. in. (or 5 sq ft).

Your ability to cheat, on that quiz you play by obtaining answers to win the prize contrary to the rules, is however nonpareil.

@knaivete,
For my part I had no idea it was a quiz with prizes.

I thought it might be some kind of informal Mensa challenge.

Let A, B & C be the three squares

A=a^2 B=b^2 C=c^2

a^2+5*m=b^2
b^2+5*m=c^2

a,b,c are all integers

5*m=b^2-a^2
5*m=c^2-b^2

so
b^2-a^2=c^2-b^2

0r
a^2+c^2=2*b^2

find a set is integers for a , b & c that fit

a=1; b=5 ; c=7
1^2+7^2=2*5^2

1^2+5*m=5^2 s0 5*m=25-1=24
5^2+5*m=7^2 so 5*m=49-25=24

m=24/5

to put this in perspective

24=2*2*3*3 so units of squares with sides of 2 in, 3 inches, 4 inches, 6 inches, 9 inches, 12 inches & 24 inches willwork--but tor 5 ft^2 its 12 inches.
