you guys MUSt be counting the same triangles over and over. some of the shapes aren't EVEN triangles. they're trapazoids or whatever. how on earth can you count more than thirty!? it took me three tries to even get to 19...

Nice one GeneralTsao and MerlinsGodson, its 43 Smile

the trick with this one is not in the counting, its in not loosing track of what you've done, here's one way

http://www.axlr8demo.co.uk/daves/tri1.jpg = 10
http://www.axlr8demo.co.uk/daves/tri2.jpg = 4
http://www.axlr8demo.co.uk/daves/tri3.jpg = 10
http://www.axlr8demo.co.uk/daves/tri4.jpg = 4
http://www.axlr8demo.co.uk/daves/tri5.jpg = 10
http://www.axlr8demo.co.uk/daves/tri6.jpg = 2
http://www.axlr8demo.co.uk/daves/tri7.jpg = 2
http://www.axlr8demo.co.uk/daves/tri8.jpg = 1

total: 43

Psi, I feel I should not let the opportunity pass to give credit where credit is due and to thank you for riddle, timely updates and in particular, your graphic explanation of the numbers. An example a lot of us will be hard pressed to emulate. Cool

I don't even see how the first example equals 10! I only see 4 triangles inside one triangle!

Suzy,
So you have 5 triangles in the first triangle. Now look at the first two small triangles--together, they make one larger one, right? Now add the next one, the third small one, and you have another, still larger triangle.

Now look at the two small triangles in the middle--together, they make one mid-size triangle. Add to that the last of the small triangles and you have yet another larger one.

Now you have 10.
